"Penny girl, gimme the phone."
"Oh just put it on speaker," Penny's voice told him. So after a bit of waiting and the sound of a lot of shifting around, Ace's voice finally came through on the other end loud and clear. "Yo, Ace here."
"Uh, hi Ace, it's me Alex. I call at a bad time?" Alex asked nervously.
"Alex? Oh hey girl long time since I heard from you. Bad time. Well... you could say that."
"COULD SAY THAT?" an irate girlfriend's voice shouted in the background. "She had better dead or dying is all I gotta say."
"What's got Penny so upse-?"
"Don't ask G," Ace advised her. "So why the late night call? Something's not wrong is there?"
"Late?" Alex asked. "It's only..." the weretiger blinked as she suddenly realized something she really should have thought of beforehand. Oh crap, I forgot about the time difference!. Plus when she added that together with the fact Penny was there, and she couldn't hear much else in the background...
Ace only sighed as the girl on the other end of the line stammered out apology after apology. "It's okay girl, it's okay, but you might as well say what you needed to get off your chest. The mood's been officially put down anyway."
"Well okay," Alex replied, still very embarrassed over this whole situation. How the heck could she of forgotten the time difference? "I'm sorry for the interruption, but I just couldn’t wait to tell someone. You see, I'm engaged."
As soon as Alex said those words Ace did three things. First, he felt genuinely happy for his best friend, and would have actually said so if it weren't for one little thing; his girlfriend laying right beside him. At that point he just froze, and after seeing the look on Penny's face he knew that this wasn't gonna be good.
Although it was kind of funny, the last time him and Alex talked she never even mentioned a boyfriend.
"Really," Penny exclaimed. "Hey congratulations! So what's he like? He cute?" Penny stopped for a moment then looked over to Ace with a slight frown. "How long did he make you wait?"
Ace just laughed nervously. Yep, he was gonna hear about this later on.
"Oh he's... different," Alex replied with a nervous laugh. It sounded like Ace still had that fear of commitment going on in his life. As for Ranma, Alex didn't know a better way to describe him. The guy was just so full of contradictions that she didn't know where to start. He was deathly afraid of cats, but obviously loved her. Old enough to be a man, but sure as hell didn't act like it at most times, not that she didn't like that about him of course. Although the weirdest thing about him by far was that curse of his, or hers depending on Ranma's luck at the time. It was kind of strange having a fiancé that was both man and woman, actually that didn't begin to describe it.
"As for the waiting well, I didn't," she told them.
"Wait, you asked him?" Penny inquired. Hey, she hadn't thought of that...
"Say what?" Ace asked nervously. Ah crap, Penny was getting one of THOSE looks.
"Well no," Alex told them. "It's actually... oh darn it I gotta go, Ranma wants me for something."
With the phone hung up, Alex turned back to the door and motioned Ranma in. Seeing her fiancé currently well, her fiancée, Alex smiled at the little redhead and handed her a towel to dry her dripping hair. "Funny, the repots said no rain today."
"Point of advice for the future," Ranma-chan said before looking over to the tiger-woman... and then over to the wall to hide her blush. Why the hell did she have to be so damn short? "Don't trust those things when you’re around me."
Alex just chuckled at Ranma's embarrassment before finding a chair to sit in. Although how Ranma could still get like this after last night was lost on her. But then again, it was just another thing she loved about him-err her. Still need to get used to that she thought with a smile.
"So what's up girlfriend?" When Ranma looked back to frown at her, Alex just smiled at the woman to show her it was all in good fun.
"Well," Ranma replied rather hesitantly. "I kind of need some help. There's something I gotta do soon and you're probably better at this stuff than me."
"What is it?" Alex asked.
"Well, I kind of need your help to pick out some formal dress wear for tonight," Ranma told her. "You know, shopping."
