And they were at a point where there was only one thing that they could do. Arms were wrapped around each other firmly enough to provide support, but soft enough to feel as if the other believed that they were holding the most precious item around. Mouths inched closer, intent on their destination, but not about to rush the event.
Their breath played against each other's lips as they were about to touch.
"Did I miss something?" So of course it would have been the absolute worst time for Asuka to return.
Almost as if magical ability had come with the new body for Shinji, the two jumped apart and in the next moment were on each side of the room. Both of them got into positions of exaggerated relaxation, looking at everything in the room save each other. If anyone hadn't seen them only a few minutes earlier, they would have been wondering what they were doing.
Just like Asuka was. She turned her confused glance from one to the other and frowned as she felt as if some big joke was being played on her. Coming out of her room, she'd seen the two of them together, but had spoken before she had come to any conclusions about it. The whole thing had looked like the two were about to kiss, and were really not adverse to the idea.
But then she shook the thought away. Misato kissing Shinji? She told herself that she must have been more out of it than she'd thought. Even if he had gotten a new look, to say the least, the idea that their guardian would do something like that was preposterous.
Or so she informed herself.
Still, she had to focus on what was important. She knew that she'd stumbled into a big shock, but she could handle it. After all, she was Asuka Langely Sohryu, the Second Child and the best at whatever she did! So what if it had taken until she had laid on her bed before she had remembered that fact? It was still true, and she wasn't going to let a little surprise knock her for a loop.
Besides, it wasn't like he had gone and done something terrible. Even with an athletic body and a handsome face, he was still her Shinji, and didn't seem to be much different personality wise. Not that she wanted him, but she figured that she'd have to keep watch so that some girl didn't try to lure him in with some pretty words.
It was still going to be a bit of a blow to her pride to do what she was about to, but she planned on just pushing past it and going on with her life.
"Don't make a big deal out of this or anything," Asuka said airily, "But I'm sorry about attacking you with a broom Shinji."
The Third Child blinked at her. "You are?"
"Of course I am. I shouldn't have, but you shouldn't have given me no warning before I saw you."
"How was I supposed to do that?"
"Details, details. Though I suppose that we'll have to hang a sign around your neck to let everyone else know what happened. With pictures just to be sure."
"Asuka..," he groaned.
"What? I did apologise," the redhead said primly, "And in any case, I don't know about you two, but I'm hungry. Shouldn't we be seeing about making dinner or something?"
"Well maybe..."
"Good. So let's get to it. Or do you want to just let us starve or something?"
Misato and Shinji looked at each other and sighed, while:
