So what if Shinji was sitting a bare meter from her right then? It didn't matter that his sweats and shirt didn't hide much of what she had seen. She could see how the muscles of his chest moved under that shirt of his. Her eyes tracked the way that he could eat the food he'd prepared with such aching slowness. Those strong hands seemed to grip the eating implements with a gentle firmness. And there was enough in the lines of the clothing for her to fill in what she had seen in the bathroom...
"Is something wrong Asuka?" drawled another voice.
"Huh?" went the dazed redhead.
Misato looked bemused. "You've been staring at Shinji for the last few minutes."
"I... I have not! I've been... thinking!"
"About what?"
"It's none of your business, but I was considering what to tell them in school today," Asuka replied. 'Yeah... that's good enough..."
"Just tell them the truth. I had to take Shinji shopping after yesterday's accident."
"I still say that I should go with you two."
"But both of you can't stay out of school, and since poor Shinji doesn't have any clothing of his own, let alone a uniform, that means that you get to go."
"Stupid reason..."
"Don't worry. We'll still have fun," the major commented as she sipped her orange juice.
"That's supposed to make me feel better?!" "No, but it makes me feel great!"
"Oh, lucky you."
"I know," Misato replied with a gesture of her drink.
Which Asuka noted, and grew concerned about. The elder woman always drank beer, and now she was having not only a non alcholic drink, but one that was appropriate for the meal! For this household, that was beyond bizarre, and something that just set her mind off on wierd tangents.
"You're not drinking beer!" Asuka commented, and then realised that it hadn't come out like she wanted.
"Huh?" went Misato.
"That's orange juice!"
"Hmm... Yeah, it is. So?"
"'So'?! Why aren't you drinking beer?"
"Well, I... That is... I felt like it. And I realised how badly I've been abusing it, so I figured that I'd cut back at least."
"'Cut back'?"
"Yes. I figure that it's a great idea, and about time. Right Shinji?"
"Right," agreed the Third Child with a smile.
The Second Child looked between them and wondered what she'd missed. It seemed that something had passed between them, but she didn't know what. And whatever it was had gotten Misato to pull back from drinking, a miracle in and of itself.
She just wanted to know why. The whole thing smelled of something funky and she could tell without them telling her that some sort of big change had happened. But of what she didn't know. It was like they were keeping some sort of big secret and laughing behind their hands at her. Not that she would think that they would, but she did know that something was most definately up.
Since it didn't seem to be forthcoming, she settled for poking at her food and grumbling under her breath while:
