Young Ranma had gone to India. The attempt on his father's life had provoked this course of action. Fearing for her son's safety and despite his objections, he was sent away to someone who owed a debt of honor to the Saotome Clan. No one would look for him there. His education and martial arts training would be maintained.
And so Ranma saotome entered the fabled Ancient One's citadel. The young boy was impressed by his surroundings, mural tapestries and statues who spoke of much mystical and esoteric lore. A tibetan man, who introduced himself as Wong, led the young Ranma to the Ancient one's meditation room. An old man in a strange robe was sitting in the center of the room.
"Greetings, young Saotome. I am the Ancient One. You will stay with me for some time. I and some others will teach you much about martial arts and many, many other things"
Ranma bowed respectfully, awed at this man's raw presence "I shall endeavor to be worthy of your teachings, revered Ancient One" Some manners had finally been rammed into Ranma's thick skull, he had also passed some time to prepare that phrase beforehand.
The Ancient One smiled "Wong will show you to your chamber. Lessons start tomorrow at dawn. Be ready in time or face punishment. I will not coddle you because of your status and wealth. Is that clear, boy ?"
"Yes, sir !" Ranma wouldn't have it any other way. He was still new at that rich and powerful stuff and didn't like it as much as his father.
*****
Days stretched in months. Months became years. Ranma learned many forms of martial arts thought lost to Man. Private tutors came to teach him about more mundane subjects. Ranma's gift at learning quickly served him well as the Ancient One corrected damage to his brain acquired during Genma's short training trip. To the old master of the mystical arts' surprise, Ranma had a great potential for Magic. When the Ancient One asked him if he wanted to become his disciple, Ranma jumped on the occasion.
Slowly, he changed... Slowly his life took on a new deeper meaning... Slowly he prepared himself for the battles ahead... Battles only a master of black magic could win !
One day, a boy roughly his age found the Ancient one's citadel. His name was Karl Mordo. He humbly asked the Ancient one to take him as a disciple. He was accepted and became a competitor for Ranma. The two didn't become friends though. Their ethics clashed : Mordo seeked power over his fellow humans while Ranma swore to protect them.
