"Sound sleeper you are, and from home quite far," said a little guy with a lot of hair, a conical hat that had fallen over halfway up, and a pair of thick glasses over blue eyes. "Best to get your shuteye though. Too many lads your age, you know. Spend all night up partying, and the morn they're regretting."
"Whatcha cooking?" asked Ranma, eyeing the large pot hanging over the fire.
"Porridge. Not much of a cook, am I, I fear. Though herbs to flavor grow quite near. Fortunately I'll have an apprentice soon. I just hope he's not a loon."
"Uh huh," said Ranma, sniffing. "So where's this apprentice of yours?"
Those eyes peered across at him as the old man stirred the contents of a pot. "You are he. Or she, I see."
"I ain't no apprentice, I'm Ranma Saotome of the Saotome School of martial arts."
The old man blinked. "Is that so? What do you know. Hmmm hmmm. Cast a spell I did today, old apprentice gone away. Off he's gone as journeyman, which of course was the plan. New apprentice did I seek, so with a spell I did peek."
"Yer magic musta gone bad, cause I'm not yer apprentice," said Ranma.
"Perhaps, perhaps," agreed the wizard. "Magic may have had mishaps? Well and good, but don't be rude. Get your sleep, not another peep. Porridge breakfast I can share, rest and it's what I'll prepare."
"Huh," said Ranma. There was something very weird but somehow likable about the fellow. Well, it wasn't like he was in the habit of turning down free food. "I've had experience with magic, it's always been bad."
"Seven curses do I see, one of which makes he a she," agreed the wizard. "Later on we'll talk of these, and then go on the day to seize."
