Ranma of Ethshar: Different school [Episode 83752]

by Kestral

"Well there's good news and bad news," said the old man, stirring the porridge with a big wooden stick, "though which is which is a matter of world views."

"I already know the bad news," said Ranma. "My stupid uncute fiancee wished me out of her existence - into this other world and all I've got is a backpack."

"Magic you have, and magic's your curse, but altogether you could do worse. Wizardry is not your style, so I've sent a dream across many a mile. Another teacher will cross your path, so restrain your angst and hold back your wrath. The porridge is about ready I see, so here's a bowl that would normally feed three."

"Hmmm," hmmmed Ranma. Food first, angst later. "You always talk in rhyme?"

"Just a recent magical affliction," said the wizard. "Fortunately it's only affecting my diction."

Ranma nodded and dug into the supersized bowl. Cursed speech impediment? Why not?

"My next apprentice not too far is he," said the wizard, "though possibly he will be a she. Further along my line of flight, it's just that you were first in my sight."

"Okay. Hey, what do ya mean, 'magic I have' outside the curse?" Ranma asked.

"When given what you need to survive," said the wizard, "that girl gave you more that you might thrive. A magical talent burns bright within thee, it's something that a spell was able to see."

"Uh huh, but not the stuff you do, huh?" Ranma asked, following this much. "So no waving my hands and have talking teapots and stuff?"

"Wizardry not your style at all, and before you run you must learn to crawl," the wizard admonished. "Less rituals needed in your art, so don't worry lad and you'll find your part."

"What kinds of magic are there?" Ranma asked.

"Wizardry is athame and ritual binding, the chaos all reality is underbinding." The wizard stopped to have a few bites of his cooling porridge. "Witchcraft is magic of body's own strength, which tends to cut down on feats of great length. Warlockry is a powerful magical thing, but those who practice face the Calling. Off to Adalgmor you'd eventually fly, and there we think - is where you'd die. Herbcraft and theurge and demonologist, I know little of these, though I add to the list."

Ranma frowned. "Warlocks use their magic and die from it?"

"Little is known of the bane of the Calling, the stronger the warlock the farther they're falling. Once one has gone to that terrible site, they're gone forever no matter their might."

"She didn't turn me into a warlock, did she?" Ranma asked, thinking that his life might have just gotten worse instead of simply more complicated.

"Be thankful a warlock is not your new art," said the wizard, "my test revealed that _________ is your professional part."
