"Is there something wrong?" her husband asked from across the table.
She looked up at the tiefling and sighed.
There was nothing really to hide physically about him. Nothing that couldn't be explained at any rate. White hair was not so much a problem, any more than it was for her to claim a premature loss of color.
She stretched and leaned back, setting her fork down.
"Sometimes I question the wisdom of taking up such a profession," Patricia said. Her voice and manner was very disciplined and formal, even with her easygoing husband across the table. "The pay is really not worth the hassles sometimes."
"You said it yourself," Dante said shrugging in good humor. "Head off trouble before it starts. And being a shrink..."
"Yes, yes, yes," Patricia waved her hand. "I get brought all the 'looneys' that may or may not be arrivals. And can get them acclimated before they do something rash."
"So what's the problem?" Dante asked.
"I have a group that I'm counselling," she said.
She paused as the waitress arrived to refill her tea.
"Here's your tea, Doctor," the dryad said as she poured the hot beverage.
"Ah, thank you, Ashely," Patricia said appreciatively. "Shouldn't your shift be over soon?"
"We run our own business hear," the dryad reminded her with a smirk. "Can't worry about shifts and such for us."
"Isn't that the truth?" Dante agreed.
The dryad smiled in response and then walked over to another table as she was called by a lizard man across the way.
"You realize," Patricia said. "Someday, some preacher or something is going to pierce the Shadow and see what hangs around in this place."
"Hey," Dante said. "We're all careful. You were saying about your recent patients?"
"Yes, it is puzzling," Patricia said. "Humans. They all show the symptoms of being new arrivals. But, they all have histories and pasts. Most intriguing. And at least one of them saw me, and I mean saw me. Ebony skin, pointy ears and all. But she pretended to not notice."
"That is odd," Dante said.
"I don't like it when things get odd," Patricia concurred. "That is usually a sign of something bad on the horizon."
