The mini-PC index on all things Pokemon, could have been more specific. In fact, its entry went as follows:
Pokeball: The Pokemon Containment Device, or Pokeball, is a secure way of storing a Trainer's pokemon. To activate, either depress the main sensor, or throw with force at a Pokemon. A Pokeball's restraining technology is primitive, and can be broken if a Pokemon is sufficiently strong, so it is recommended that Pokemon be weakened first, usually through battle. Once a Pokemon ceases struggling, and agrees to serve the Trainer, they are rewarded with a fairly idyllic setting. The Pokeball has two sizes, the smaller in which all functions other than idyllic containment are unavailable, and a larger size where the Trainer can manipulate the ball. To release a Pokemon, the ball is either thrown away, which releases the Pokemon on the nearest horizontal surface, or press the release button while pointing the main sensor at the point you want the Pokemon to appear.
It was, admittedly, a very long entry, and Ranma, unless alerted that it was worth listening to, would have never got to the end of it before stopping or skipping on. So he probably deserved what happened next.
An observer could have told you what actually happened. Ranma pressed the release button while looking down at the ball. Or more specifically, the sensor that lit up brightly to release the Pokemon inside. Brightly enough, in fact to blind Ranma, who threw his head back reflexively. This gave the ball enough space to materialize Ukyou...directly above Ranma. Glad to be out, the Ponyta stretched for a moment...then gravity reared it's ugly head. Of course, she was directly above Ranma at the time, so Ranma, blinded, experienced a full sixty-odd pound firey horse-shaped creature falling on him from above.
From Ranma's point of view, it seemed to go more like:
*click* "Waaagh!" *HMMM...* "[Ahhh...WAAAAGH!]" *WHUD!*
Ranma groaned. "Ukyou? Are you alright?" he asked, concerned.
"[I think so. Why the heck did you release me nine feet in the air?]"
"Mostly because I had no idea how to work those stupid ball things," Ranma admitted. "So you're OK? It didn't hurt you or anything?"
Ukyou looked puzzled. "[No...of course not. Why would it?]"
Ranma sighed. "I dunno. I didn't know what- Hey, Ukyou, before we get into that..."
"[Yes, sugar?]"
"If you're fine, would you mind GETTIN' OFFA ME?"
"So what actually happened to you?" Ranma said a few moments later, brushing himself off. "I mean, I know I beaned the both of you in the head, and then a flash, and then..."
Ukyou shook herself. "[I was surrounded by light for a moment. I wasn't sure what was going on, and I struggled a bit, scared I guess. A voice in my head asked me if I was willing to serve and accompany you as your Pokemon. After getting over the shock, I agreed, since I wanted to do that anyway. Then I was in a field.]"
"A field?"
"[Yeah. Green, soft grass, perfect for playing in, and good to snack on, a small stable nearby with food and soft hay to sleep on, nothing but the sun and grass and blue sky...]"
