The Rattata blinked as she reappeared in the field. She had on her face an expression of something resembling stunned shock. Ukyou prepared for the worse, some sort of attack-
"[You caught me? Mr. I-don't-know-a-Pokeball-from-a-hole-in-the-ground and Miss Flame-Brain here-]"
"[Hey!]" interjected Ukyou, but the Rattata continued unhindered.
"[-who collectively know as much about Pokemon training and battling as a Magikarp knows how to fly caught me?!?]" Her fur was standing up, eyes glowing as her voice rocked with a combination of indignation and fury. Despite themselves, Ukyou and Ranma found themselves backing away from the furious rodent.
"[ARRRRGH!]"
The Rattata sighed, annoyance vented. "[It's downright embarrassing,]" she muttered. "[You can come out now. I'm your lawfully agreed Pokemon, and I've got to help you, if for no other reason that my fortunes are now tied into yours.]"
Ranma blinked, peeking out from behind a tree. "You're not going to bite me or anything?"
The Rattata shook her head. "[What would be in it for me? You two idiots would would accidentally pull me back into the ball if I ran anyway. I'm just annoyed I didn't get some sort of up front fee for the help I'll give you.]"
"[Hmmph,]" put in Ukyou. "[You're a greedy little rat, aren't you?]"
The Rattata smirked. "[I like to think of it as fiscally-minded. Still, once we bring you up to speed as a Trainer, with your ability to talk directly to Pokemon... The possible profits are astounding!]" Ranma could almost see the dollar signs popping up in her eyes as she looked at him.
Ranma scratched his head. "So...you'll help us out, because it'll help you get rich? I think I can trust that..."
Ukyou shook her head, mane whipping a little. "[I think you should put her back in her ball.]"
Ranma shook his head, smiling a little. "Nah. She's like Nabiki back home. She might be only in it for the money, fame, and cushy position, but she's basically honest. I think.]"
"[Thanks for your ringing endorsement, though I'll take the name. There's a little fear in your eyes when you say it.]" The Rattata grinned ferally. "[I like that in a name. So, you two were headed for town?]"
Ukyou frowned, weighing pride versus necessity, and decided, reluctently on the latter. "[Yeah. So...you know the way there, Nabiki?]"
"[Like the back of my paw. But we've got a lot to teach you two on the way. By any chance do you have a Pokedex? That would make things a bit easier.]"
"A what?" Ranma looked confused. "Nothin' like that. Some of those balls, a little PC-thing-"
"[That PC thing is a Pokedex. Looks like we're going to start from basic principles, unfortunately. You better listen too, flame-brain. 'Cause there will be a test at the end.]"
Ranma groaned. This sounded an awful lot like school.
