Ranma started back as the young-seeming goddess began to glow. "What's going on?"
"You made a wish," Makoto said, watching as Hotaru began to levitate slightly. "A very selfless wish, too."
Ranma's mouth gaped open. "I... I did, didn't I. But -"
Before he could finish, Hotaru's eyes snapped downward to meet his. Her voice, almost unrecognizable, boomed out. "WISH GRANTED."
Ranma blinked as Hotaru's glow vanished and she began to settle to the ground. "Um... nothing's happened."
"With a wish like that," Hotaru said, raising an arm to wipe sweat from her face, "the changes aren't going to be noticeable at first."
"Oh," Ranma said, thinking. "What happened then?"
Makoto answered for the other goddess. "We don't know, particularly when the wish involves us."
"Knowing my luck, it means something bad is going to happen to me," Ranma said grouchily. This wasn't exactly how he had planned on spending his wish, either. Not that he wanted the goddesses to be unhappy, he quickly added to himself, just in case they could read minds.
Evidently, they could not, as neither's expression shifted. "I wouldn't think so," Makoto said with a kind smile.
"At the very least," Hotaru, "with that kind of wish you're owed some good karma."
Ranma frowned, but not because of the comment. "Umm... you're kind of fading away..."
Hotaru glanced down at her arm, which indeed was becoming translucent. "With the wish made, we cannot stay here for long," she said.
"But -" Ranma began, only to stop as Makoto answered his unfinished question.
"But with that wish, I'm sure we'll be seeing you again," she said.
A few moments later, there was nothing left to show the goddesses had ever been there, except for Ranma's contented, nearly full stomach.
