Confusion.
"I hate you! As far as I'm concerned, this engagement is over!" Akane screamed, appearing out of nowhere.
"What the?" Ranma blinked.
A disembodied voice began speaking, coming from everywhere yet nowhere. "Is this the value a human places on another?"
"What the heck are you talkin about!" Ranma seethed.
"Go to hell!"
"Ranma you jerk!"
"Gah! Shut up!"
"Ranma you idiot!
The words came in a torrent, all of them belonging to people he knew. Ryoga. Akane. Nabiki.
"The value of a human being, of self, is based on the perceptions of others."
Ranma balked, "Like hell! They didn't mean nothin by it! Who the heck are you!?"
"Denial is the quintessential truth of your existence. Your entire existence is built upon suppressed emotions and desires. You don't want friends. You want enemies."
"Kinda crap is that!" Ranma growled dangerously, "You don't know nothin about nothin! I want friends, if I could get them all ta just give up on gettin revenge I'd be happy!"
Denial.
"Wanna play tag?" A cherub little kid asked.
Chibi-Ranma shook his head, "Nah. Papa said I gotta train so I can grow up big and strong! Train train train!"
"That's so boring! Come on, were kids, let's play some games!" The kid repeated.
Ranma snorted, "Nuh huh! No way!"
"Bleah! Your boring!" The child called out, before disappearing.
The disembodied voice began again. "You wished to play. You yearned to play. You hated your father for destroying this part of your life. You hated the child for getting to live the part he had destroyed."
Ranma appeared, glaring at the little version of himself, "That's a crock of horse crap! Pops ain't perfect, but I sure as heck didn't hate him!"
The Chibi-Ranma whipped around and threw his older self a glare, "I hate you."
Ranma blinked, "What the?!"
"The child is the representation of yourself. He is perfect, unreasonable, and logical. He is all that you want to be, the denied well spring of your desires."
"Mother let him take us. He beat us. Tortured us. Denied us. Hurt us. Drove us to madness. Dictated our life. Forced his will. I hate. You hate. We hate him." Chibi-Ranma growled.
Ranma stared at the kid. With each word he spoke something in his mind began to churn and rumble, shaking at the bonds that held it beneath a veil of gentleness and forgiveness.
"Curse. We have been cursed by him. Friends who are not friends hurt us, pricked us, and slammed us. We hate them." Chibi-Ranma continued.
Images of his friends began to appear. Ryoga, Shampoo, Cologne, Soun, Nabiki, Akane, Nodoka, Tarou, Hiroshi, Daisuke, Genma, Ukyo, Kasumi.
"Is the value of a friend based on how much they hurt you?" The disembodied voice picked up again.
Ranma winced. He could feel an immense rage building up in him with each illusion, with each word; with each second he was trapped here.
"I don't hate them! I don't!" he suddenly shouted, to deny the voices.
Acceptance.
"You hate them." Chibi-Ranma said simply. The words driving into the older Ranma's mind like sharp burning daggers.
"Taken from your mother, tortured by your father, raised a puppet under the whim of a foolish man. You hate them. Father, mother. Truth will lead to your absolution."
"No! NO! I don't hate.. I don't.. forgive.. love.. no!"
"Boy! You can't cry! Crying isn't manly! If you aren't manly, your mother will force us to commit Seppuku!" Genma suddenly spoke up, words harsh and uncaring.
Nodoka nodded in time with her husband's words, "Yes. Quite unmanly to cry my son." she frowned disapprovingly, "Perhaps its time to discuss a little contract you and your father made before abandoning me."
Chibi-Ranma growled, lunging at the two illusions viciously. One hand, shaped like a claw, collapsed Nodoka's chest, the young version of himself ripping a still beating mass of muscle from her chest. The look of shock on the woman's face increased when the boy shoved her heart in her face, forcing it into her mouth while snarling, "No heart! No love! Eat it! Eat the source of my hate, of my pain! You little bitch!"
"Stop!.. Stop it! Don't hurt my mom!" Ranma tried to move, to stop the little version of himself, but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't get his body to respond.
"Pfeh! Have you no honor boy! To kill your own... URK!" Genma gurgled, holding his neck were four purple angry Ki-claws had sliced him a new smile.
"DIE! DIE! The Neko-ken! Feel my rage!" Chibi-Ranma screamed, lunging at the man as he stumbled back from the strike.
The images faded, Ranma's awareness returning to that simple chair he sat in.
"You felt your heart sing with joy. Each strike, each painful scar upon their bodies sung to you. Denial is the anti-thesis of truth. Do you deny the truth?!"
Ranma stared blankly into the darkness, unresponsive, unmoving.
Akane suddenly appeared, dressed in a lightly tanned yellow dogi. "COME ON! FIGHT ME FOR REAL!
"I'll fight yah when you can touch me!" A younger Ranma appeared, moving to and fro dodging the angry girls strikes.
"Damn it! Come on!"
"Pfft! Yer to slow! Built like a brick, thighs are too thick!"
The disembodied voice spoke up again, "Why?"
"Why what?" Ranma snapped.
"Why do you torment her? Why do you anger her if you don't hate her."
"Eh!? That don't matter! She's gotta learn to control that rage disorder!" Ranma coolly defended himself.
The illusions vanished again, leaving him alone in the darkened room.
"Anger clouds judgment. Narrows perspective. It is the antithesis of growth. You do not want her to grow, to evolve from the anger you hate. You deny your motives."
"What." Ranma deadpanned.
"Want to be friends?" Akane appeared, a light friendly smile on her face.
Ranma-chan grunted, suddenly appearing, "Yah.. sure."
"This single moment, a treasured memory laced with betrayal and hate. You thought to have a friend, only to receive what you wanted most. An Enemy."
"GAH! YOU PERVERT!" Akane suddenly shifted from smiling, the scowling in rage, a table slamming down on the suddenly male Ranma.
"It.. she thought I was bein a pervert.." Ranma defended weakly.
"No."
"But that's what happened?!" he yelled angrily.
"Denying the truth of the moment lays upon the foundation of lies. She didn't think of you as a pervert. She didn't think anything. You wanted her to hate you. To hit you. The alien sensation of friendship and comanderie you felt with her pushed it, forced your harsh words. You were simply being yourself. The cold, suppressed part of yourself yearning for release. Why deny the truth? Why shield yourself to your true motives?"
"I don't hate her.."
Chibi-Ranma appeared behind the girl. "You hate her." he accused.
Another Chibi Ranma appeared, directly in front of her. "Hate her clothes."
"Hate her voice."
"Hate her family, the family you never got to have."
"Hate her smile."
"Hate her eyes."
"Hate everything about her."
"But.." Ranma grimaced, the feelings of rage and contempt he had suppressed for so long boiling to the surface. "But.. but if I hate her.. why.. why do I love her?!?!"
Love.
"You admit to hating this female. You admit to loving this female. Two forces of opposite spectrums."
"What the hell do you want from me?!" Ranma screamed.
"Absolution."
"Wha?"
Shampoo suddenly appeared, glaring at the boy. "I kill girl Ranma!"
"What tha heck does Shampoo got to do with this!"
Another Shampoo appeared, smiling seductively, "Airen take Shampoo on date, yes?"
"Gah?!"
Mousse appeared, "Saotome you fiend!"
Ryoga appeared, "SAOTOME! PREPARE TO DIE!"
Cologne appeared, "Son-in-law."
Happosai appeared, waving a bra in his hand, "Oh, where is my dear sweet Ranma-chan!?
Ukyo appeared, "Ranchan!"
Kodachi appeared, "Ranmasama!"
Tatewaki Kuno appeared, "Foul Sorcerer!"
Daisuke and Hiroshi appeared, "Yo Ranma! Whats up?"
Akane appeared, "Ranma you idiot!"
Nabiki appeared, "Where's that jock now?"
Kasumi appeared, "Oh dear. Don't mind Akane Ranma, she really is a sweet girl. She's just a violent maniac."
Yuka and Sayuri appeared, "Akane is soooo lucky to have a fiancée like you!"
The disembodied voice began again. "Each representation. Each a symbol holding the truth. Each pertaining the sin with which you let fester. To feed your ego. To feed the hate burning within. Absolution must be reached."
"What the heck are you talkin about?! There my friends! What kind of word is absolution anyway?!"
The images suddenly began spinning, voices joining into one as they all repeated the same, single word.
"Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma."
"They present to you the truth of your sin. Do you Deny it?"
"Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma."
"What the heck are you talking about?" Ranma gritted his teeth.
"Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma."
"The sin. Your sin. The source of your hate. The source of your joy. Deny it no longer!"
"Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma."
"My sin? What.." He squinted his eyes closed. The voices.. the voices were maddening.
"Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma."
"Are humans this blind to the truth of their existence? Do you not see everything begins and ends with you?"
"Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma."
"I don't understand!" He wouldn't cry! He wouldn't!
"Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma."
"Denial. Antithesis of truth. You know what your sin is. You fight against its truth, but you lose yourself to the fight. Deny the truth no longer. You are..."
"Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma." "Ranma."
"SHUT UP! I don't want their attention! They mean nothing to me! I hate them! I hate everything about them! Stupid idiots! I don't want their scorn! I don't want their hate! I want them all to DIE! To fade away!" Ranma suddenly screamed, tears streaming down his cheeks.
The circle of illusions vanished, carrying with it their terrible calls.
"... Absolved."
"I hate them. I hate everything." Ranma sniffed, "But.. but WHY do I love them!? Why do I want them to fade away, why do I want them to be damned to hell.. only.. only to want them to stay!?"
Silence.
"Hey?!? Where are you!?!"
Silence.
"You bastard! Get back here!"
Silence.
"Goddamn it."
Silence.
Ranma sighed.
"You are afraid to be alone. You deny it. You fight yourself over it. The truth of your existence is perceived by the eyes and thoughts of others."
"I... I hate them, but I can't.. can't stand leaving them?"
"Correct."
"... I'm so fucked up."
***
"...." Bob blanched, "What kind of fucked up machine is that?!"
Freudian Odine grinned, "Evangelion Mind Cracker!"
"Eh.. it doesn't really have an Evangelion feel to it. Okay, well it does, but it really doesn't leave me feeling all that messed up."
Odine shrugged, "It's a loaner. Gainax keeps the real machine stashed away."
"Oh.." Bob shrugged, "Whatever. We gonna finish torturin that poor sob?"
Odine sighed, "Not enough time. Episodes almost finished."
"Bleah. I was lookin forward to the guy snappin and laying some serious lesbian bitch slappin down!"
"Heh. They don't call you the lesbian slayer for nothin, huh?"
"Damn right!" Bob grinned, flexing his flabby arms mightily.
"Whatever. Get that blubbering wreck out of my machine. I got some fine-tuning to work out before the next victim.. eer.. uh.. volunteer gets here."
"Oh? Who is it this time?" Bob blinked, confused.
