Second Chances, Ltd.: How Ranma found peace, love, and a purpose - until (DARK) [Episode 94663]

by Kestral

Nabiki kept reading, occasionally humming to herself over some interesting development.

Akane turned her own attention to the various books and pictures, finally stopping at what she thought was the most recent one.

In 1992, she and Ranma had both been 16. In 2015 that meant that they would have been 39.

Ranma-chan looked older somehow, mid to late 40s at least. Gone was the innocence, gone was the young flesh and some of the padding. It had obviously been lean years between the Ranma she remembered and the Ranma in the photo. A few lines were showing, some gray in the hair, but this was still recognizably Ranma.

It had taken years, but Ranma had apparently mostly recovered and found some solace somewhere. Life went on. There was a sadness there, but there was also some measure of peace and even happiness.

A different group of girls surrounded her in this picture. Nothing improper but nothing that Akane could really focus on. Something about the picture still made her both sad and angry on some level.

Maybe it was that her 'marriage and happily ever after' had been replaced with more idiocy from parents, death, destruction, and eventually this boarding house.

"Hey, Akane, listen to this," said Nabiki as she read further. "It looks like that city we were in was called 'Tokyo-3' due to the old Tokyo being underwater. Anyway it kept getting hit with 'Angel' attacks and the girls here at the last grouping were all orphans going to the new high school here. Then there were these sightings of the red-eyed ghost."

"Red eyes?" Akane asked.

"Some girl in a school uniform with blue hair and red eyes," said Nabiki. "Everybody dismissed the sightings in the paper as an urban legend but for some reason Ranma seems to have taken it seriously."

Akane frowned on the thought of Ranma fooling around with schoolgirls after her death. "What's the last entry like?"

Nabiki winced, she'd been putting it off. "You're sure you want to hear this?"

Akane crossed back to where Nabiki was sitting and reading.

Nabiki sighed and spared a glance towards the two fathers opening an old (1998) bottle of sake to celebrate the marriage now foretold. "Okay. Let's do this upstairs though, I think they're about to start singing."

Nabiki looked at the way the two fathers were cheering each other on and agreed. There was just something inherently wrong about such cheer and drunken spectacle occurring right now.

Today NERV has been accused of some pretty nasty stuff by the UN, who are the jerks who put Ikari and his crew in charge in the first place. Yet another UN deal gone sour.

When I was training under my father all those years ago, I developed a danger sense - I think it was while studying hwarang do. It's been giving me a steady buzz since this morning. When the explosions started happening and the TV showed those troops moving in after the commando forces, it got louder.

Right now it's going so bad that I damn near want to jump out the window every time the wind shifts direction.

I'm turning the video recorder on in the living room. Maybe if the ghost shows up here, I can get answers.

"A 'recorder'?" Nabiki and Akane said together.

This was followed by a mad dash down to the foyer where the two girls found some odd looking sort-of-CD gadget with a lens near the television.

With considerable trepidation, Nabiki figured out how to start the device playing and did so. Akane turned the TV on.

When Nabiki got it to playback, they quickly found:
