Different priorities = different rates of speed.
The stairs spiraled down into the darkness, with infrequent light-stones placed along the route. Ranma reached the bottom just as Rei was about one quarter of the way down.
Ranma looked over the big door festooned with wards and sealed with symbols and barred and chained. Then he found the little hidden service tunnel and quickly took that. He was, after all, trying to get away.
He knew that it was often overlooked and frequently bricked up, but that there would be a way that the original builders had gotten massive doors like that down here. The spiral staircase was too narrow, and so there would be this alternate. After opening it up, he carefully re-bricked it behind himself to throw off pursuit, then turned and tripped.
The body of an ancient warrior or tomb-thief, down to crumbling skeleton? Hmmm. Ah! There was his little bag of treasure, a few scrolls. Potions weren't going to still be good but... oooh. NICE sword. Eh, he needed something like this anyway. Particularly if he was going to be forced by that stupid father of his to go stealing from temples. The glow from the sword was enough indication that it was enchanted and it beat trying to carry candles or something.
Thus heartened, Ranma began climbing the shaft.
Rei finally made it down the stairs to be confronted with only one door - the massive one that had 'do not touch' written all over it. There was no sign of the thief, which meant:
