Environmental Services turned out to be a greenhouse level that more resembled a thick jungle.
General Tchon looked around briefly then addressed one of the trees, "Rowan, if you would please explain to these heralds your function?"
The reporters were beginning to get used to strangeness. The tree morphing into a naked (except for strategically placed leaves) obviously female human shape was enough to catch more than a few of them by surprise.
"I hight Rowan," said the green haired brown skinned woman. "Hamadryad. Ship air ist directed here by vents. Refreshed then sent along."
"The purpose of Fortress Kirby is normally system defense," said Tchon. "As we spend quite a long time in wildspace, a method of refreshing our air envelope was needed and Rowan volunteered her considerable services."
"Get to see considerable part of universe," added Rowan, a faint smile showing.
A small dog barked and growled at the strange creature briefly.
"The fruit here is carefully gathered and we've planted the seeds on a number of worlds within Rangard's system," said Tchon.
One of the reporters began openly weeping, causing both Rowan and Tchon to direct looks of puzzlement and concern towards the individual.
"Treehugger," explained Jerald Streama.
Rowan thought that sounded interesting and so stepped out and hugged the shorter woman. Who responded by hugging back and crying even harder.
Tchon still looked puzzled, but as soon as the reporter could be convinced to let go, started leading them away. "Next we visit -"
"Excuse me," said one fellow. "Les Nessman here. You said your fortress here was used for 'system defense'?"
"Yes," agreed Tchon.
"So that means you have enemies," pressed Les, who'd gotten a little less clueless in his later years.
"Yes, there are a number of hostile forces in the multiverse, though mainly we just have to worry about pirates and the occasional marauder," confessed Tchon.
"So, can we see your weapons?" asked Les. "You have to have some method of attacking your opponents."
"They're nothing special," said Tchon, "are you sure you wouldn't rather look at the hangar deck or visit the market level?"
The other reporters looked at each other, quickly coming to a decision.
