Maya just stood there as the wizard spoke. She wasn't sure what to think about what he was talking about - Adam, Seele, Second and Third Impacts, the Evas. First there was the bewilderment. Then there was anger. And then...
...then the wizard ended with a question. "In the mean time, are you willing to help save the world?"
Maya couldn't take it any more. She laughed. It was a laugh that her co-workers would have been surprised to hear her utter, one that sounded strange even to her own ears - a harsh, mocking laugh. It was a moment before she calmed herself and spoke. "Number twenty-three."
The wizard raised an eyebrow.
"It's a sort of a game among the tech staff. We keep track of the Nerv conspiracy theories floating around on the Internet." Maya smirked. "That was Theory Number Twenty-Three: Nerv is actually a front for an ancient conspiracy that is trying to cause Third Impact, rather than prevent it."
"I assure you, Ms. Ibuki, I am entirely serious," the old man said.
A low growl that surprised even her emerged from Maya's throat. She spoke, starting softly but quickly increasing into an almost yell. "Even if I thought you were, why should I trust someone who turned me into some sort of... demonic serial rapist?" Maya's hands twitched, as though they wanted to wrap themselves around something - probably the old wizard's throat. "You know, back in the Geofront these kind of stories seemed funny..."
Maya paused, considering her next words. "But it doesn't seem so funny now, listening to you slander all those people. I may not ever like Commander Ikari, but I certainly respect him. And to hear you talking that way about him, after everything he's done to make sure that mankind has a figting chance to survive the Angel's return..." Though she wasn't aware of it, Maya's eyes flared yellow for a moment. "It makes me furious."
"You ask me whether I want to save the world?" Maya asked. "I already am."
"Are you quite done?" the wizard asked, then continued without waiting for an answer. "I assure you, if you would speak to Misato or Ritsuko, they would confirm what I've told you."
Maya's eyes began to glow again, and this time she noticed it. "I'm sure they would. I saw them leaving here. You've proven you can change people, and there's no telling what you did to them. I can't trust them now." She paused. "And I assure you, if I find out you've touched Dr. Akagi, I will find some way to make you pay."
