Akane strained to hear what sounded like a voice, but couldn't understand the words. It was so barely audible that she almost missed it, but her senses were acute enough to determine that it wasn't just the wind.
But then she remembered that there was not another soul on the entire planet as far as she knew, and that made it rather impossible to hear a voice other than the ones with her.
Turning to her sister, she barked, "Stop that!"
"Huh?" went Nabiki, seemingly distracted enough that she hadn't registered what was said.
"Don't play with me! I know I heard a girl whispering!"
"You did?"
"Oh come on!" the younger girl growled, "You can't tell me that you didn't hear yourself murmur that!"
"I didn't say anything. I was too busy..."
"Doing what?"
"Seeing if I really saw someone, or something, go past that window..."
"Oh..."
"Now, if you're hearing things, and I'm seeing things, then that's a bad sign, right?"
"I... I'd say so..."
"Great... This can't be good."
"I was kind of hoping that the worst thing that we'd have to deal with at the moment would be how chilly its been lately," the martial artist drawled as she hugged herself to try and keep warm.
"Hmmm... It is getting a bit nippy..."
"You're telling me. It's almost enough for me to see if I can find a sweater. At least a blouse..."
"Um... Akane?"
"Yeah?"
"It's August," her sister reminded her, "We shouldn't have to worry about a slight chill at all."
"Oh dear..."
"Let's see... We're stuck in a future where we're not only dead, but everyone is doing a really big get together as a giant ocean of goo, and now we have to deal with this?"
"So what can we do?" Akane asked.
"Hope that we have someone else still left as a person that has a better idea of what to do than we do?"
PenPen was not a happy penguin. He hadn't seen a single human for days, not to mention his, so he was rather lonely. Taking care of himself wasn't that hard, but he did miss the woman who drank lots of liquor, the boy who cooked all that good stuff, and even the girl with the loud mouth. But it wasn't hard to tell that no one was going to come, as there wasn't a soul around.
And what made it worse was the fact that he wasn't built for walking long distances. That made a trip down to the store a bit of a problem, and as such, meant that his beer supplies were limited. And he didn't look foward to trying to try and replenish them.
Which meant that he was lonely, hungry, and running out of liquor.
If he could only get out of this situation, he'd do so with great speed.
As it was, the only thing that he could do was take a swig of beer and stare out the window. "Wark!"
"Okay," Nabiki commented as she sat on the floor with her sister, "We have a problem."
The other girl gave her a flat look. "Only one?"
"At the moment, only one that is immediate. We have to have a plan for figuring out how we're going to survive. At the moment, we have plenty of food, but..."
"What?"
"It will eventually go bad, and all too soon. That means eating a lot of canned foods."
"We'll be out of her long before then," Akane asked hopefully, "right?"
"If everything goes well, I'd like to think so, but we don't have that genie around on some sort of speed dial to pick us up. And as the only responsible ones, we have to take charge."
"Well, we know one thing. Just give them all the sake and booze, and they'll be happy."
Sparing her father and his friend a glance, the middle Tendo daughter sighed. "True, but we'll have to take care of ourselves as well. Luckily, we don't have to worry about money. But right now we have to pick what we'll do."
