Second Chances, Ltd.: the daughter of a friend. (DARK) [Episode 95848]

by Kestral

Akane sat down, fresh tears tracking her face.

Nabiki waited, and for once was simply there for her sister.

Akane began to speak quietly, unburdening herself of the life she'd just glimpsed.

"Her name was Kimiyo Yamamoto, and she was Yuka and Hiroshi's daughter. Born in 1998, she barely remembered Second Impact but did remember the years of hardship immediately following. Ranma took her in as a student of his art in 2003 and she was one of the girls in an earlier group from 2003 to 2009 who returned to the Tokyo-3 Anything Goes Dojo in 2011.

"She was a premiere student of the Art, one of Ranma's best. He was her friend and sensei, someone she respected and even had a little crush on when she was younger despite him being stuck as a girl.

"Kimiyo had good grades and was in the Journalism Club and was working on a paper exploring things that didn't add up from the old Antarctic Expedition in 1999.

"Her favorite food was raw veggies in a wasabi-ranch dressing that Ranma used to make for her..."

Akane's voice stopped and her head dropped. Nabiki could tell from the noises and the way Akane's shoulders shook what had hit her sister.

After all, it had hit herself when she'd tasted that other life. The sheer waste of it all - someone who had a handle on life and prepared to do something about it. Someone reduced to red goo that had no individuality or purpose or for that matter sanity.

This had brought the future home for Akane, as it had Nabiki. No longer were these simply ciphers - but living breathing people with their own hopes and dreams and fears and plans. Everyone that Kimiyo had known - now also part of the goo.

"If we get back, we'll have to stop them somehow," promised Nabiki. "Somehow."
