Zor's Bet - The SDF-3: Battle of the Line (DARK) [Episode 98976]

by AWarringer

December 2247, Orbit around Earth

All he could hear was his breath and the low noise of the air-recycler, when he looked to the left and the right. Hundreds of Starfuries were to the left and right. Somewhere in the distance he could see defense satellites and the last rest of the once powerful EarthForce fleet. He breathed in deep. Even through he knew that he would die today, he hated the tense atmosphere of waiting.

"Captain?" he heard the voice of his wingman over the radio.

"Yes," he asked back in a flat tone.

He could hear some sobs over the radio, when his wingman responded.

"It was an honor to serve under you."

He closed his eyes and just nodded. He knew that his wingman couldn't see him, but also knew that he didn't need to say anything in response.

He just stared out in the empty pitch-black space in front of him, trying to find any optical evidence of a jumphole opening.

After some time, he saw hundreds of yellow glowing points appearing in front of them, growing to jumpholes and spitting out hundreds of Minbari vessels.

He gritted his teeth. Before he would die, Captain Micheal von Richthofen was determined to continue his families legacy.

With a wordless scream, echoed by hundreds and thousands of other pilots, he gunned the engines of his Starfury. With blazing pulse cannons he dived headfirst into the nearest group of Minbari fighters.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Without any evidence of a jumphole forming a small fleet of vessels appeared right behind the Minbari-Human battle lines. Horrified human faces watched as the battle continued before their eyes, neither side really noticing their sudden appearance. The older humans aboard the ships were instantly reminded of the 'Rain of Death' that had all but destroyed Earth, while the younger ones were reminded of other battles. All were determined to not let anyone destroy Earth again. None of them really thought about what happened to them.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Von Richthofen still screamed the wordless scream as he continued to blast away on the Minbari fighter in front of him. One of his fusion rockets slammed into the engine of the enemy fighter and ripped it apart, adding the fifth kill to von Richthofens list. Around him other pilots didn't have his luck. Starfuries blew up in the fire of the enemy, while the last few capital ships tried to fight of the superior Minbari Sharlin and Tinashi ships.

Von Richthofen had to press his eyes shut when a bright white beam lanced out from behind the enemies lines. When the light died down and Michael opened his eyes, several douzen of Minbari vessels and hundreds of fighters had ceased to exist. Where the Minbari vessels had been, ships and fighters of unknown configurations moved through the enemies line and towards the planet, laying waste to the Minbari while moving, nearly transparent bubbles of energy preventing the Minbari weapons to strike the ships.

While most of the Minbari still destroyed EarthForce ships and Starfuries, more and more of them moved to fight the new unknown enemy, that had sided with the humans.

Von Richthofen didn't notice the Minbari fighter moving into fireing position behind him, until a pulse of energy streaked by.

"SHIT!"

He used the maneuverability of his Starfury to do a one-eighty on the spot, turning his weapons on the more agile Minbari fighter. But before he could press the trigger the Minbari nearly served off one of his wings, only to be blasted out of existence from an unknown source.

A blue and silver shape streaked by and von Richthofen just stared after it. The shape than condensed in a fighter that was shaped like a 20th century fighter jet moving into formation next to him.
