Ukyo leapt to the side just before her grill exploded in a storm of flying metal.
"You didna pay da toll, little boy," said the pudgy guy in the center of the small crowd. "I hear you running around, callin for da vengeance on dis 'Ranma' boyo. Then ya gotta go openin' da grill here but you no pay me da toll. I gots to get paid or bad tings dey might happen, ya know?"
Ukyo, still dressing like a boy, stood there with spatula in ready position. "It's my school's yard. I don't see any property signs."
"Everybody knows in Hokkaido, ya got to pay da man," said the pudgy guy. "Ah. Too bads. The boys gonna have to rough up dat pretty face. I'd make the exception for you, but then I'd have ta do dat for everybody. Ya see?"
"Try it," warned Ukyo. "As it is, you owe me for the grill."
The tall thin guy came forward, twirling a chain. "Okonomiyaki style martial arts. Weapon user. Style developed after the Disarmament by the Kuonji family in Nara after their family fortune was depleted and they turned to restauranteurs. After some iffy years making 'hot pots' they turned to okonomiyaki as a specialty."
"You've done your homework," said Ukyo. "Now let me show you!"
The chain whipped out, Ukyo blocked.
The chain-wielder stepped back.
Ukyo frowned as her battle spatula came apart with a neat cut where she'd blocked the chain.
"Chain here practices an old martial arts style too," pointed out the pudgy man as he turned to go. "The thing about martial arts - there is always a duality - an opposing school. I give you two leave to do what you will. Just make sure you chastise Mister Kuonji."
"The Kuonji style is like many city-based styles," said Chain. "You use what is available and bring it to an Art. My own style fled but had to give up the sword. We found a new focus to bring to bear. Your school is based on creation - food to be exact. My school is based on destruction - felling an entire line of trees or quenching a fire with a single strike. Block, you can watch while I deal with the pretty boy here."
Ranma had grabbed a set of useful items and was almost at the point of using a Teleport Without Error when he realized what he was doing. Did he really want to reveal himself to Ukyo?
