"Hmph," hmmphed Pewter, plainly unconvinced.
"Yeesh, you shapeshifting cat-creatures are so unreasonable," said Sinda, getting up. "See, I'm absolu-" (WHAM!)
Pewter let out a very human-sounding sigh, picked up the dark-skinned humanoid by the collar, and dragged her back into her shelter.
"We're still lost."
"This is the right island though. I'm sure of it!"
"Are you sure you're a halfling?"
The halfling drew herself up to her total height. Which wasn't much. "ME?! I'm a kender from far off lands, the only kender cleric of Paladine and Champion Of Justice!"
"I thought you was a cleric of Tyr?" said one of the others, trying to get a rock out of her shoe.
"Well, I sought out guidance from the clerics and they sent me here to work for the local god of Justice - who is Tyr. Something about cross coverage arrangements and something about disasters waiting to happen and such. Yet I shall prevail and the Fists Of Justice shall rain down on the Heads Of Injustice And Treachery!"
"More like the knees and groin area considering the relative size of villains I've seen. By the way, why do you have to pose dramatically when you say things like that?"
"I don't know. It just feels right somehow," said the kender, flicking her braid back. "The cause of Righteousness will guide our path to this warrior dark elf that those Harpers were talking about. Then we can go forth and Smite Evil or my name isn't Amelia Thistleburr!"
"It isn't?"
"Actually it is. Work with me here, will you?" asked Amelia.
A mynah bird stared for a moment. "Did she just declare herself to be a kender cleric of Tyr who is adventuring to smite evil?"
"A-yup," agreed a monkey.
"Does she know she's holding that mace wrong?"
"A-nyope," said the monkey.
"You two do realize that those species are not indigenous to these parts," pointed out a raven.
"A- whuh?" asked the monkey.
"I have a bad feeling about this," said one of the other adventurers as she looked around the forest. "Have you noticed how many birds and snakes and lizards and things are watching us?"
"Let 'em look! They've probably never seen a champion of justice before!" Amelia brought her hand up to slap herself in the chest.
WHUNK!
Unfortunately she chose the hand that was carrying her mace.
"Cleric's down," pointed out one of the fellow adventurers.
"Good enough. Time to set up for the night," said another.
"It's still a bit creepy, and I don't think we're in the right forest. I just saw a monkey and a mynah bird - we must have come pretty damn far South."
"That's nothing. I thought I saw a penguin earlier."
The woman with the staff nodded. "I get the feeling that something is unnatural about this place."
