A Ranma in Aramar: Cleric [Episode 102029]

by Kestral

There are nine major Temples with an associated Power, and a whole lot of aligned deities that are considered minor by the locals. Each temple preaches a particular path of philosophy, while the lesser deities are more often the province of those invoking their name in a particular spell or event.

I mention this because today I met a cleric of Hevrig, the local major god of Law and Magic. Hevrig clerics apparently like a stylized eye motif, because it was present at the collar and at the borders of sleeves. He was a dwarf, so he kind of looked like a pro football player with a heavy beard and three feet of height edited out. As we were in Nihon's capital at the time, his weapons were absent except for some kind of staff that I'm told indicated his rank within his Temple and his place of origin by the runes engraved along the top.

Hevrig clerics are apparently fairly dour and humorless, honest to a fault though. To them the Law is everything, anything else is balanced. Laws can be learned and the universe understood, and information is power. The accumulation of knowledge can be used for either good or bad, as can the various forms of magic. So it's kind of a faith of scholars.

My guide told me to at least be glad it wasn't someone of the Silver Temple. I forgot to ask why that would be a bad thing, as aren't they the faith of protection - followers of some goddess of defense and excellence in battle?

"That would be my turn," said the fire elf. "I am Tamlyn, a cleric of Hevrig."

"Well, that means we won't let you do any bargaining or haggling," said Saithe. "You're definitely not doing the shopping."

"True," murmurred the knife-wielder.

"Why's that?" asked Ranma, not seeing the connection.

"A cleric of Hevrig cannot lie," answered Tamlyn looking as if the subject were distasteful.

"Whoa," said Ranma. Not being able to lie. She wouldn't be able to run scams. Disguises were a kind of lie too, so those were out.

"We're almost there, I can see the shadow of our lifeboat. Further introductions will have to wait," said Tamlyn.

"So it shall," opined Erma. "Careful, the stavanzer has been injured and is likely already in the rage that its species is known for."

Ranma decided they were close enough to the ground and leapt out, ignoring the startled noises from several of the girls so that he could get the first actual hits in.

A blur announced that his gambit had been successful, the stavanzer apparently not figuring that by attacking him it would make itself a target again. Instead the beast lunged directly towards Ranma.
