Pewter: strange image [Episode 102374]

by Kestral

Pewter watched briefly, then snuck away from the camp.

He'd have to track her down eventually, but there was no hurry. He was a dragon, she was an elf. He could live to see 1200 years, while she might live two or three hundred.

Let her get to know her new friends and see what developed.

Pewter stopped. What was that rank smell? It brought forth images that he didn't understand. Shapeless closed tubes made of cloth and metal chests in long rows?

Gorkk looked around and decided now was the time. "Shaman. Get over here."

The shaman moved slowly forward, wondering what this was about.

"Where is the best hunting?" Gorkk asked.

Ranmanobaka Ahoman scratched his head, finding a louse and quickly munching on the morsel before anyone else could claim it. "Let me check the runes."

The other goblins were slightly nervous about this. Ahomon had been given his name by the spirits, and he was very powerful in the ways of magic. Physically he was a runt and he spent entirely too much time studying to be a strong goblin. Yet he did have some admirable qualities within goblin society. For one thing he was one of the best runners and a very good hider. He was also able to do magic of some kind.

Ahomon threw a set of carved bones. They settled in a nice neat arc, one flipping upside down after it had landed.

"The spirits have spoken. We're in serious $#!^," said Ahomon as he read the portents.

Gorkk cuffed the shaman nervously. "Try again."

Ahomon rubbed the impact site briefly, glaring at the party leader. Then did as he was told and threw the set a second time.

The goblins grew a little more nervous as the tiles fell in an arrow-shape.

"Hmmmm," said Ahomon as he read the sigils showing. "Go this way two days. Don't shoot a damn thing unless you want to join your ancestors real damn fast and in some horribly unpleasant manner."

The goblins began to mutter nervously, looking around them as if expecting pit fiends to be lurking in the forest.

"The forest is watching us," said one of the lesser goblins.

"We're a goblin warparty, we ain't fraid a no forest," growled Gorkk. "Find something closer."

"Look! Gorkk! A campsite," said one of the lesser goblins. "Adventurers! Not more than a few hours old."

"Awright," said Gorkk with a grin. "Fresh meat! Let's get 'em!"

Ahomon shrugged. Not like anyone listened to him anyway.
