Exiled Jedi: Scrambling for Allies [Episode 102917]

by Lionheart

Thanks to Bail's suggestion, they found a sympathetic ear swiftly. Senator Garm Bel Iblis, senator from Corellia, was for them. However, the Diktat of Corellia sector was so against the Jedi they didn't dare approach him to ask if that opposition was real or fake. That limited the amount of good the senator could do for them. But at least he was a second source of news.

Of course, the poor senator of Corellia was under as much scrutiny as Bail was, and he was felt to be skirting the fringes of open treason, so it wasn't the most reliable of sources. Garm really wasn't likely to last long under those circumstances, and feeding secret data to them could only rise so high as a tertiary interest for the beleaguered senator.

Garm was doing all he could to save his sector from further Imperial annexation, and it was taking all of his time. Nor could the Jedi help openly, as it could draw attention to their being involved as the Jedi couldn't really do much in secret over such a public issue in a famous sector so central to the Empire's plans.

They'd been trying to pretend they didn't exist.

Mon Mothma, while her views nicely synched with those of the Jedi - the destruction of Palpatine's New Order and restoration of the Republic, her vocal opposition to the Empire in the senate made her even worse to contact than Bail now was. Except for her frequent and unpredictable trips across the galaxy, she was under near-constant scrutiny by Imperial Intelligence.

She could contact them, if Bail gave her enough trust to pass on word of their existence, but she was working so hard to dodge Imperial spies on her trips setting up intelligence cells throughout the galaxy that she wasn't easy to contact off Coruscant, and anything on the capitol was ripe with spies.

The Gungans had made their case before the floor of the Imperial Senate, charging the Empire itself with genocide, and the evidence of their case had been convincing. Palpatine's response had been so veiled and subtle, shifting a few officers, blaming underlings who lost their positions (only to be promoted to better ones), sending resources and aid to the devastated population, and generally making nice... until "pirates attracted by the arriving wealth" landed and destroyed much of what was left of Gungan society. None were known to have survived of that amphibious species.

There was a great ceremony on Coruscant wherein they laid the Gungan senatorial seat to rest. Amid much pomp and verbose speeches over the tragedy, Palpatine promised to raise taxes to increase the fleet so they could root out piracy forever.

The Jedi were beginning to feel very alone.

Though no longer Queen of Naboo, Amidala still had friends and influence there. She saw the desperate need of these Jedi for help and saw fit to reactivate some of her most trusted contacts there.

Without the aid of their Corporate Sector spies and Sairune's secret aid they approached being blind as those contacts grew in scope and size. And even Amelia knew they could lose Sairune's aid as easily as they'd lost open contact with Alderaan. Her family were all Jedi as far back as records would go. They'd hidden that well, even during the time of the Old Republic, but Palpatine couldn't remain blind to their doings forever.

It was a serious situation indeed.
