They were called 'grappler arms' and they were used in combat by various factions for various reasons.
Pirates still favored them.
Akane scooted into the control seat, flicking the display cone towards her right eye so that she would get the necessary extra data needed for proper use of the grapplers. She activated the two arms and quickly reached towards the Shadow, intent on crushing the bio-construct in those claws.
She managed to grab it, but as she put pressure on it, the thing squirted out of her grasp and quickly began slithering up the arm.
Akane said something impolite.
"Seal all entry points," ordered Nabiki. "Boarding party - reroute to ship defense mode. Keep that thing from getting in."
"Hull camera #7 has a picture of it. It's probing around the door. Now its going along the hull." Pirate Senji looked over the creature. "Shadow bio-construct. Looks like a wakiji."
The various pirates considered the idea of that thing getting on board. Nobody thought it would turn out to be a good thing.
