Prince Phil had started the whole thing, with brave representitives of all the major kingdoms now embarking on journeys to the rest of the world. The world that had gone on without the constant monster predations that those inside the Monster Barrier had suffered. Who knew what greatness they had reached while the kingdoms inside that barrier had constantly fought for survival?
So it was that a wandering warrior ditched his father and came here, seeking adventure and excitement and not incidently enough money to keep going.
It had been a small thing, a Guide throwing a frog into a pool of water, and emerging as a feared THING with fur and sharp slashing fangs. A white faced Ranma had then listened to the explanation of creatures falling in the pools getting cursed and being twisted by magic into something else.
His father had still wanted to train there.
Ranma had left. Had it been anything besides THAT, he might have remained but been ready to flee rather than take the chance of becoming something unnatural.
Here he had a chance to see the world, participate in a grand adventure, get three square meals a day, and get paid on top of that. What could go wrong?
He wandered around, looking at the various things, the varied people, and tuned out all the speechmakers. That Princess Amelia sure liked to talk, but Ranma hadn't met a mayor or higher up that didn't go for longwinded speeches.
His skills were such that he got a place almost immediately aboard the ship Serenity's Dream but then he noticed something funny about the ship.
There was a lot of girls on the ship, and despite his being dragged about by his father on the path of becoming a Mystic Swordsman, Ranma had not spent a huge amount of time associating with girls. As some of these were very pretty girls, he felt inclined to rectify that oversight though as they were all going to be aboard ship for an extended period - no hurry was indicated.
There was some commotion and the ships began to leave early. A squabble from the docks revealed some panda running around and trying to get on one of the ships. Then Ranma was too busy, being part of a line of people stowing the supplies from the deck to a cargo hold, to pay attention to such trivialities. By the time they were done they were well away from the dock.
"DRAGON!"
Ranma blinked and started scanning the skies, quickly finding it. A golden dragon? Not one of the common breeds. Pretty though. Hmmm. It was turning. Oh crap.
When the shockwave from the first blast had knocked their own mainsail over, Ranma was there - leaping in and grabbing some girl who had fallen where the mast would end up a moment later. Then he was away and off to the next disaster-about-to-occur.
Before Ranma was paying attention to anything else there had come the cry of someone yelling "Dragon Slave!" and that was quickly followed by a lot of people screaming the word "Tsunami!" All of which proved to Ranma that some people should not be trusted with high level spells.
Then the wave hit.
