Prince Ranma: underestimating chocobo [Episode 109719]

by Kestral

A chocobo was a riding bird and a herbivore. They liked nuts and certain types of green leafy plants. They were about even as far as a horse was concerned when compared in terms of endurance or speed, though a chocobo was capable of faster sprints. Horses could carry greater weight and haul heavier loads. Chocobo could jump a lot better.

There were those who discounted a herbivore's abilities in battle.

"Why, you..." yelled Surya as she got slowly up.

"Wha?!" Rin asked as her mount pivoted.

"Eeep!" said Miyuki as she tried to hold on to her own mount.

"Yaaa!" exclaimed Chizuko as her own mount moved.

"I'll teach you to underestimate Surya The Slayer!" said Surya as she took a ready stance to face the oncoming green chocobo. "I have killed ninety-nine humans. You'll be my hundredth!"

"WARK!" called out Chizuko's yellow chocobo as it ran over the threat at nearly forty-five miles per hour.

"I'm not done yet," proclaimed Surya as she got up on her hands and knees.

"WARK!" called out Rin's blue chocobo as it came in at a different angle and ran over the attacker.

"...not yet..." grunted Surya as she slowly pried herself out of the ground.

"WARK CHEEEE!" called out Miyuki's green chocobo as it stomped on the would be assassin.

"...ungh..." said Surya, getting up even slower. "That hurt."

rumble rumble rumble

Surya looked up to see the rest of the herd coming, summoned by the three serving as mounts, a line of chocobo whose feet were obscured by the amount of dust they churned. "...oh hell..."

A last lone chocobo came scrambling after the rest of the herd.

"Ungh," said Surya, achingly slow as she tried to get up, coughing up what tasted like blood. Slowly her eyes focussed on something in front of her. Bird's feet?

Surya began slowly looking around to find herself surrounded by various large herbivorous birds. They were just herbivores and inferior creatures that submitted to lesser species, so they should respect someone of a superior species if she just was forceful, right? "Boo! Scat! Go away, you stupid chickens!"

A Payan Nut was the size of a human head and had a shell nearly an inch thick. Chocobos loved them, it was part of their normal diet.

"Maybe she wasn't low level after all, she got up at least three times - that means she was a Boss for at least the level," said Rin as her chocobo headed for the stable. "I wonder if we get experience points for that?"

"Maybe I should have played that game," said Miyuki. "I think I'd understand this a lot better."

"Getting dark, we ought to retire to an inn!" Chizuko said. "Maybe we can level up."

"I don't think it quite works that way," said Rin, though a little disappointed herself that she didn't level up. Logically she knew it didn't work that way. Emotionally she wanted it to.

"Where's da prince?" asked one of the guards.

"Sneaking out to have a look at the bridal candidates without any of the advisors along," remarked a guard.

"Oi, how many guards be sneaking along with him?" asked the first.

"One that he knows of. Otherwise - three snipers, four ninja, and a mage," responded the second.

"He's allowin' da one to sneak after him?" Guard #1 was surprised. An indication that he'd met the prince.

"He's the sort who figures that if one guard is sneaking to keep an eye on him, it's better than having half the castle roused just cause of him feeling restless," assured the second guard.

"Always knew he was a real prince, and more'n one way," said the first. "Can't blame him either, I'd be wanting to take a personal gander at what I be getting into."

"I hear you," agreed the second before continuing on with her rounds. Better the prince than her.
