First her father, who had always been so devoted to work, had died. As a prominent paleobiologist, he had been gone from her life most of the time, and on one of the occasions where she was staying with him - he had died in a fairly messy manner in the act of saving her life. She'd been eight at the time.
She had come away from that encounter with blurred memories, a scar across her chest, and an odd trinket from the excavation site. Something she kept with her most of the time.
Her mother had died two years later. As a member of the USAF, there were occasionally accidents that never made the headlines, and one of them had claimed her other parent.
That had been at age fourteen, now at age sixteen she was definitely a "military brat" - being comfortable with and familiar with a number of firearms. She'd been living off one of the bases, checked up on regularly by various crewmates of her mother's acquaintance, but otherwise living alone off of instant meals of dubious nutritional value.
She had been told of something long ago, which was that she had a fiance out there somewhere. Her feelings on the matter were somewhat confused - on the one hand it was a tie to both parents. On the other it was something she neither particularly wanted or needed herself. She was perfectly fine on her own.
She had her own hopes and dreams, which included joining the Air Force on her own. Once there she'd have the sort of logged flight hours she could make use of elsewhere. Eventually on to NASA perhaps.
