"So, you saved me?" the girl with the black hair asked, looking very uncertain of herself.
"Yup," said Ranma. "Ranma Saotome, warrior."
"Ah," said the girl hesitantly. "My name is... Hotaru."
Having absolutely no idea why this girl would be this hesitant, Ranma decided to try drawing her out. "Hey, that's a nice name!"
"thank you" said the girl, blushing and seeming to withdraw into her blanket more.
"So," said Ranma, trying to make conversation. "You're a white magic specialist from Seiryun, right?"
Hotaru blinked. "How did you know that?"
"Yer clothes," said Ranma, thumb jabbing towards the stuff drying on the line.
"Ah," said Hotaru retreating into her figurative shell again.
Ranma scratched his head. He was gonna be stuck with this cute if awful young girl for awhile, and she seemed really sad and stuff. He'd try calling her names or something to rile her up a little, but there just seemed to be something about her so down on herself that wouldn't fly. What to do? Hmmm. Maybe. "So ya wanna be friends?"
Hotaru stared at the hand, then up at Ranma. "R-really?"
The warrior knew this meant SOMETHING, he was fairly clueless about many things but just from the girl's reaction - he was guessing this was really damn important to her. "Sure! One for all and all for one and that kinda thing!"
sniffle
For a brief moment Ranma wondered how the hell he'd screwed up. The girl's eyes got all wobbly and tears started up, and he was absolutely sure he'd said something wrong.
Then she was in his arms so fast he'd wondered if it was a speed technique, hanging on and crying her little purple eyes out.
Ranma listened to the occasional comments as the girl wound down, apparently the shipwreck being the emotional rock that triggered an avalanche that had been building for awhile. Especially as it turned out that his companion was:
