There wee all manner of false versions of immortallity. Most of them acquired through evil means.
Then there were the enlightened immortals.
There were nine stages of enlightened immortality, but once the first step was taken on that path, only the immortal would choose when they finally left mortal life. And they would only acquire the power to choose upon reaching the ninth stage of immortality.
Should the immortal be killed, then they were merely reborn one hundred years or so later. They would live their life, slowly growing up like any other person. And, like any other reincarnation, they would remember virtually nothing of their past life aside from occasional dreams.
This would change as they neared the physical age of eighteen, about the age Ranma and Nabiki now held. Memories would start to come, old acquaintances would be met, and such meetings would confuse the temporarily amnesia-cursed souls. But eventually, memories of their path would come more clearly...and they would remember their names...and their deeds...and all their powers...
Such immortals as these were offered positions among the gods. Often they were the forebears of great dynasties of men. And even the Hells paid them some respect, though that had listened over the past centuries due to a joke that had been taken too far.
Setsuna Meioh watched through the time gates as Ranma studied the book, and Nabiki learned from Ranma.
It took centuries to make all the journies and train one's self to achieve each step of immortallity. However, a reborn immortal would recover each step at a rate of one a year, with only the form of presenting ones self to the various dragon kings, lords of hell, and the celestial court necessary.
Ranma and Nabiki would probably recover their memories and much of their power within the year, and return to the circle of immortals where they belonged. She would welcome their opinions, counter though they were to her own. The two had a way of finding pieces in her plans that would grow to a tyranny rather than a peaceful order.
That opposition would be necessary.
Then she noticed Fei-Lei in her mirror and frowned. This would normally not be a difficult situation. The false immortal could delay the return of her rivals and friends, but she could not truly kill them. The child growing in Nabiki's womb, however, was another story.
Directly involving herself would be against the rules the enlightened immortals set for themselves, but she needn't do that. There were plenty of other tools at hand...
