"Sssssssssssssss," hissed the little girl, standing between fat ugly toad-man and smells-nice boy. (Don't worry, I'm going to take care of you.)
Genma wasn't sure what to make of this development. Not at all. Still he was quite capable of taking care of some puny little girl...
The little girl bared fangs and leapt, making a thirty foot leap to bounce off some pipes, flip into the air, then land off on Genma's other side. Somehow she looked bigger.
Genma straightened, having ducked as the near-human missile had shot at him. Fortunately he was quite able to avoid - was that BLOOD dripping from the girl's hands?
The girl snarled again and spat something from her mouth.
Genma saw what it was and clapped one hand to the side of his head, confirming that he was now missing an ear. "AAAAAGHHHHHHHHHH!"
She stepped forward, every bit of her little body radiating THREAT as far as Genma was concerned and he discovered that deep in his heart that there was something around he could fear more than the late unlamented Master. It shared his lack of height but that was about it.
"Hey, hey, it's okay," said Ranma holding his hands out. He slowly approached the girl, still talking softly.
"Ranma, are you NUTS?" Genma appreciated not immediately dying, it was just that it struck him that Ranma's sacrifice was not a particularly bright move.
"That's okay, that's okay," repeated Ranma, getting up to the little girl and tentatively beginning to pet her.
"Rarrrarrr. Rurrrramm" (That's nice. Oh yeah, right there.)
Genma slowly reached out and grabbed his ear, backing away from the sight of his son playing lion tamer.
"Raruunma. Kth'aa thk. Sahath'n shko. Rarun'ra." (You're cute. For a hairless ape. I'm just so tired. Guard me.)
"She said my name," said Ranma proudly as the girl seemed to shrink down some as she curled into his lap.
"ARE you NUTS?" repeated Genma. "What are you doing?"
"Pops, I had some serious doubts," said Ranma, stroking the sleeping girl's head, "I mean SERIOUS doubts. This catfist though is pretty damn cool."
"That is..." Genma blinked. The invincible catfist/nekoken?
Pieces of concrete pipe fell to the ground from where the girl had bounced off them earlier.
Genma swallowed. Damn. What a technique. He'd better burn this manual though. "I'm going to go to that hospital down the road, son. Don't do anything till I get back."
Ranma watched his father go, not pointing out that the girl in his lap would likely keep from going anywhere anyway.
"Rrarun'ra," repeated the girl in her sleep, rubbing her face against her boy and marking him with her scent. She wasn't sure where she was, or what she was doing here, but she'd found a warm lap and that was certainly something accomplished.
"Well, you know my name," said the boy, seeing the girl hadn't quite gone to sleep yet. "What's yours?"
"rrr?!" The girl blinked up some sort of understanding coming in that drowse between wakefulness and sleep. "Hhota'ru."
"Hotaru?" asked the caregiver, smoothing grime from her mane.
Yes, agreed the proud warrior. That was close enough.
