Ranma had faced some of those, and knew better.
Sparring with an Intuitive, Class C, proved to Ranma that while it was possible to beat one if you caught them completely flatfooted - catching them offguard was difficult at best. Some of the psi didn't have a ready combat use, dowsing for one, but despite his father dismissing such skills - Ranma knew better.
Then had come a time when Ranma had been in New Amsterdam and had visited the Space Center.
The idea of his father dismissing psi as useless vanished when he saw a teke tap into generators and use psi to lift a satellite into orbit. It was one of the most impressive damn things he'd ever seen - over four tons of metal lifting slowly at first and then gaining speed until it was lost in the sky overhead.
It was enough to make the ability to shatter bricks and master the martial arts, well - not unimportant but certainly less impressive.
He'd met her then, his celebrity status getting him into the room where a little blonde girl had smiled at him. Ranma had discovered another sort of power that the girl had wielded then, older and more commonplace than psi - but in its own way nearly as devastating.
Since then he'd ended up meeting more of the high powered psi.
When Genma's latest fiasco had gone down, Ranma's presence had been seen and those observing had gone quickly to work.
"So if I defeat you, then I can eat?" asked Ranma of the girl glowering at him.
The Guide helpfully translated this, and the girl's look turned up from 'glower' nearly to 'snarl'. She said something in reply.
The Guide really didn't want to translate this part, but swallowed nervously and did so anyway. "She say she warrior. You no blow her off like that. She fight you and teach you big lesson."
Somewhere between New Amsterdam and now, Ranma had learned tact. Not much perhaps, but a touch of it.
"I didn't mean it like that," said Ranma. "I ain't saying she's not a strong fighter, it's just that I'm better."
The Guide tried couching it slightly more politely, and the near 'snarl' went back to 'glower' with a smile that didn't have a friendly look to it.
"I take it she accepts my challenge," said Ranma drily.
"Growf," said the unconcerned panda, dismissing this village as unimportant. Their martial arts style wasn't that impressive, though parts seemed oddly familiar.
The fight went quickly and one-sidedly. Some would argue that the village champion was already weary and not at her best. Some would argue her initial overconfidence provided an advantage to the other fighter.
Ranma bounced in place, waiting to see what was going to happen. Did this mean he could eat now?
"AIYAH!" called out one of the villagers, pointing up and to the East.
A dot resolved into a figure, one standing on a broomstick as if it were the rail of some ship and looking perfectly at home there.
Ranma immediately recognized the figure as being from one of his side-trips. Specifically:
