Not that they were the same. Ranma, being more physically active, joined some dojos as it interested him, and found that he enjoyed the Art. On the other hand, Ami wasn't one for fighting, but she thrived in the juku. The two of them would walk each other to classes, and it was clear that they would always be close.
Which was why he was nearby as a monster popped out from behind the store counter.
"Get back Ami!" he barked, pushing her behind him.
"But..," she replied weakly.
"No 'buts'! I'm not about to let you get hurt. Don't worry, I'll take care of this monster!"
The blue haired girl tried to stop him, but he was already moving. Dodging several blows, he attacked, sending several punches back. But they didn't have the effect he thought they would, as the creature didn't seem phased by what he'd done. Instead, he had to worry as a set of claws tore open the sleeve of his shirt as he tried to back away.
And then the yoma really got into it, and went to slam him in the chest.
If he'd been Ranma Saotome, there was a possibility that he could twist around the blow and use it to his advantage.
As he was Ranma Mizuno, he was not trained enough, and got bodily flung back so that he crashed into a set of shelves and landed on the floor. Various items crashed down over him, and several of them hurt as they hit. Not that he would be able to fight it anyway, as the wind had been knocked out of him.
