The shopgirl-yoma attack. Ami transform. Her friends arriving. The yoma went down.
For once in his life, he couldn't protect her. He couldn't do anything except distract the yoma for a few moments before he was treated like a first year student at a streetbrawl.
Ranma had always had his pride, both himself and in his little sister. He was proud of her - of her excellence in her studies, her juku, her dreams of being a doctor. He loved his sister deeply and dearly and had been so happy to see her get a new friend. Though that Usagi girl hadn't struck him as being entirely there.
Physical problems he could deal with. He was tough and one of the most skilled fighters in the greater Tokyo area. He had won awards in regional competitions, studied dozens of arts, and worked out each. And his frail little sister that he'd been protecting for so long had just turned into a superhero and blasted something he couldn't hurt at all.
He wasn't entirely sure how long he walked through the streets of Tokyo, one of the fundamental pillars of his existence having just been cut down. Did he even know his sister? That she could keep a secret of this magnitude from him seemed impossible previously. This is the same girl who came to him all upset when the time she'd come up with a basketball plan and gained the friendship of all those classmates had become last week's news and they'd gone back to treating her as a nerd?
He'd been there for her, year after year. He'd known eventually she would go off to medical school and maybe get a boyfriend, then he'd pictured himself as playing the "older protective brother who shows up to indicate treating his little sister badly would end up with a lot of dental work" kind of scenario.
Leaning against a building he considered his right fist. This was the hand that had defeated so many school bullies. "The Right Hand Of God" some high school newspaper had called it. His punch was strong enough to go through the wall of a refrigerator. He could crush stone with the techniques he'd acquired over the years. That yoma hadn't been phased at all.
Ranma Mizuno wandered the streets, wondering what he could do. He wanted to protect his sister, he wanted to help, but he couldn't do a damn thing.
Finding a bridge over a stream that looked familiar, and remembering how he'd once carried Ami past here during a rainstorm when she'd forgotten her umbrella - Ranma wondered what he could do about it.
