Ranma simply looked over the lab and let his memories as Ash provide details.
The colony ship Rainbow Archer had been designed in a modular fashion to make the one-way trip and be disassembled at destination. By the time the original equipment failed from age, it was expected that the new planet's resources would have been mapped out and put to use.
Except that that hadn't happened here. The original inhabitants had used up ores and petrochemicals and almost everything else that could be used, then gone on to some form of biotechnology. Then they'd died out. Theories as to why they'd died out were still floating around without any particular evidence to favor one over the others.
Ash hadn't paid much attention to that sort of thing, having grown up in this world he accepted the way things were without any thought about how things could be different.
The Professor had windmill generators, solar panels, and storage batteries - as well as some equipment from the ship. He was a pokegirl researcher and working on various reports and papers was a fulltime job for him. Then he also had to sponsor the trainees.
Such as Ash R. Ketchum, beginning trainer.
"Oh? Ash! Conference Room. I'll be there shortly. Yes, very interesting."
Ash nodded and made his way to the room, to his relief he might be the last to arrive but the selection process hadn't been started yet.
The Professor entered a few minutes later, still musing over something he'd recently found, but carrying the bowl with him.
Ash stood a little straighter as he realized what it was. Everyone present had their name written on one of the slips of paper in that bowl, and as their name came up it would be their turn to go into the next room and stand in the scan circle.
He'd only seen the Apparatus once. Like all the Alien Technology they'd uncovered, it was smooth lines and curves. A raised platform atop a well of sorts - with the walls of that well glistening as if wet. Atop that raised platform was the scanning circle, which would analyze him and determine if he left with a pokegirl or not.
The type of pokegirl partner would determine his career track. Would he be a trainer, someone who had several pokegirls and taught them a variety of skills and roles? Would he have a single pokegirl and go into a career in which his pokegirl partner could assist him? Would he simply do, as was darkly rumored, and vanish - never to be seen again?
"Melissa Bones," called out the Professor. A pretty redheaded girl got up and nearly tripped over the steps leading to the door to the Apparatus room. "Calm down, child. When you've finished, use the other door and wait outside."
Ash waited nervously as one after the other of the kids left. Parvati Pavil. Gary Oak. Brittany Shields. Hikaru Gosunkugi. Akemi Roppongi. Alex Weasly. ?! Waitaminute - HIKARU GOSUNKUGI?!
Ash searched the memories he had. As Ranma, he remembered the skinny voodoo wannabe. As Ash, he remembered the weird Goth girl who liked Bug and Undead type pokegirls. They DID resemble each other.
"Ash Ketchum."
Ash shook his head a few times before remembering that was his name here and now.
