On the other hand the last time he had visited, Rei's apartment had also contained a naked Rei, which had made up for a lot. He just wished that for once in his life he would not have been such a wuss and not have made such an idiot out of himself.
Here was his chance to redeem himself.
He rang the bell at Rei's door and to his surprise it not only made a ringing sound but also almost instantly opened the door.
Or rather Rei opened the door. Had she been standing behind it waiting for him?
"Hello Shinji, please come in." She greeted him somewhat emotionlessly as she stood to the side.
But this was a great improvement over her normal form of address "Shinji" not "Pilot Ikari" or "Third Children".
Rei's manner was not the only thing that had improved and become more invitingly. Someone with a very literal understanding of the concept had cleaned and tidied up what he could see of her apartment.
The mail that had clogged the entryway in a pile behind the door for example was now neatly sorted into orderly stacks on the floor next to the wall.
Rei herself was also changed. Not only was she faintly smiling, but for the first time since he had known her she was wearing something other than a plugsuit or schooluniform. It was not immediately clear what that was as a big apron covered most of her, but the white sleeves and tights that were visible assured him that she was not naked underneath. The big red apron had an obscene message on it; an inviation to do improper things to the cook.
Shinji blushed at the thought, but reminded herself that Rei most liekly either did not understand or care about what it said. For all he knew she had received it as gag-gift from someone with a crude sense of humor or even found it somewhere in the trash.
"Hello, Rei," he said lamely and preceded into the apartment while Rei closed the door behind him.
"I see you have cleaned up since I was last here." He tried to make conversation.
She had indeed cleaned the room, but with somewhat mixed results. It appeared that Rei had not been used to doing housework. She had mostly removed the dirt and folded stacked or sorted everything else including the dirty laundry.
As a knew addition there was a folding table with two plastic chairs on opposite ends by the window. There also were several boxes with NERV-logos in the corner. From what he could make out of the labels they might have come from the NERV cafeteria. A small portable kitchen sink-like appliance was propped up near the doorway.
"Can I offer you a drink?" Rei's delivery of this line sounded studied, but he appreciated the feeling as he did feel a bit thirsty.
"Thank you," he acknowledged as took the offered glass of clear liquid.
He felt a bit uncomfortable as she avidly watched him take a sip. It was not water as he had expected. Some kind of alcoholic drink perhaps. It did make him feel a bit lightheaded.
Only after he had drunk about a third of the glass and assured her that it was fine did she take her eyes of him.
She turned around to the kitchenette to get something or other and now Shinji could finally see what she was wearing underneath her apron.
Not very much it turned out. What he had already seen earlier was most of it. What he had thought to be tights were in fact stockings that terminated slightly below her shapely and totally uncovered posterior. Garters along her sides connected it to her top which manly seemed to exist on her shoulder and arms and around her hips. Underneath the apron both her breasts and her crotch must be completely bare he concluded fascinatedly.
He took a big gulp of his drink to keep from panicking.
It suddenly occurred to Shinji that Rei did not only know, what her apron said, but also intended to put into practice.
He felt curiously calm and disinclined to run away about this, he mused as he was drinking the last of his drink.
It must have been the alcohol or his earlier vow not to act like a total wuss again, but Shinji would not run away from this. He would show her how to cook a vegetarian meal. Something simple and quick he decided. And then Rei would take of her apron and they would sit down at the plastic table for a romantic dinner for two. And then....
