Fact: Magic here was by spell and special technique. Sword wielders generally had some martial arts attacks that at least bordered on magical for example.
A quick look at a certain beach revealed that Ranma was indeed a martial artist here, and knew some special techniques that at least bordered on magic.
So she knew what she would find when she started looking for the Orb. It was a source of vast magical power, and the moment it turned on she had no problem finding it though she couldn't get too close to the source because of some magical interference.
It was a dark and brooding castle, exactly the sort where you'd expect vampiric sorcerers or cackling mad scientists to inhabit.
Naturally, that's what she found.
An evil Overlord whose castle looked down from its mountain upon a rustic village. Nearby lakes retained enough heat from some underground volcanic flow that fogs and mists were common in the otherwise chill air.
She had to wait some time before the Overlord made an appearance and she knew who the first villain of their little adventure was. When that Overlord appeared, Setsuna nodded - having expected it on some level.
