Especially with head injuries and the like. Suppress this portion of the brain and watch as suddenly the person couldn't make sense out of the written word. This area and it was the spoken word. Over here - numbers became a jumble.
Some reports had been about artificial stimulation of some nerve regions, and those reports were secret and highly classified, but Doctor Moreau had gotten ahold of some of them. Heightened libido over here. Extreme sensitivity to pain there. Lower intelligence here but heighten intelligence there. Cut off hearing or sight or sense of taste there or stimulate them to produce other reactions.
Moral behavior patterns could be discarded or reinforced. Mood could be altered.
Doctor Moreau wanted Japanese purity to take a major blow. There were many ways to do this. Household finances were typically controlled by the wife - so a plague of innumeracy hitting the women could cause Japanese men to seek wives among the groups not normally targetted by purists. Hitting one region, and the victims would become extremely suggestible during the third stage of the flu. Another and the "nesting instinct" would go into overdrive. Yet another would produce women who were very sexually aggressive but a bit "dumbed down" as the raging hormones distracted them from other concerns. Yet another and they would flee from their own shadows.
There were some variables the mad scientist didn't know. Would the effect be permanent? He thought it more likely that the effects would wear off after some time, or skills would be relearned.
Which is why he'd wanted a test case. And in a place like Nerima who would notice? Just one variety, and he could use the data from this virus to release the one that would banish Japanese purity for all time!
He didn't realize that Ryouga would become a carrier of the disease and spread it beyond the Tendo household. Even mad scientists miss little details.
And so Akane Tendo might have been the first but she would hardly be the only one to be affected by this test flu.
As it was, Akane woke up from a couple of days with the sniffles and didn't immediately realize that:
