She didn't even dare look at her brother right now, as she'd crossed a line between them. She knew her brother in the manner of close siblings. She knew he was prone to act prior to thinking things through. She knew he was often stubborn and that he had this fondness for tales of the shih - wandering martial artists who dispensed justice in ancient China. She knew he could focus on the goal and lose track of things around him. She knew all that.
She knew, even as she worried constantly about his disappearance, that being beaten by that yoma was a smack in the head to him. That he would HAVE to better himself. He'd done this before, after all. Ranma Mizuno didn't lose easily or often, and he always responded to the challenge to improve.
When he'd been nine years old, a fifteen year old martial artist had challenged and defeated Ranma - then laughed about the "pipsqueak". Ranma had went over the challenge and fight in detail, figured out the school of martial arts, then tracked down the school that acted as a rival to the challenger's school. In two weeks he'd returned and played "Royal Smack Down" on that challenger.
Four times since then the basic pattern had been followed. If someone challenged him and won, and Ranma learned something from the fight - all well and good. He didn't lose that often, but if he got a new manuever or technique out of it - he still considered that a victory - just a more subtle one. If the fight ended with someone offering insult, her dear brother displayed a positively mulish focus in overcoming that opponent.
The yoma hadn't insulted or belittled him, but Ranma had responded. Ami had thought that this fight was not something her brother could cope with - and yet here he was again trying to put himself in danger for her sake. He could have just accepted that this was her fight and walked away, but no - he HAD to go protecting her again!
'Thor' continued to loom over her in a very uncertain and confused manner.
"BAKA!" declared Mercury, thumping the large thunder god in the chest with her fist.
Thor looked over the little girl who'd just turned her back on him, then over at her various friends. This was SO not going by his script.
