"It's a spider-golem, sire."
Ranma rolled his eyes. Dwarves. Some of them were too serious. "Metaphor."
"No, I'm pretty sure it's a spider-golem," said the dwarf.
"Ah, right," said Ranma. "Hey, Kepeskixen. Need you to heat it up while the mages cast a spell. Captain? Have your mages ready Ice Storm spells."
"If that doesn't work, my prince?" asked the Captain, tapping her wand thoughtfully.
"We'll have to go to extreme measures," admitted Ranma.
"Darn that prince," grumbled another dwarf in another section of town. "No thought at all for those who have to clean up these messes."
"You're not blaming the attackers?" asked an odd spindly shape wearing a clown mask in a voice that sounded as if the words were being spoken by a little girl and an old man at the same time.
"Oh, the Lolth worshippers and the drow will pay," said the dwarf. "I've got a lead on that Genocide Blade."
"Hmph. You mortals can be quite clever and unwise at the same time," said the clown. "Souldrinker weapons built to gain power with each of a specific race slain, dedicated to the complete destruction of a species. You realize the dangers inherent in such a thing but continue to play with forces you cannot control."
"So who said I would be the one wielding it," grumped the dwarf. "The spider-lovers have made enough enemies that one of them will do quite well."
"You do realize that the priestesses of Eilistraee will also be targetted," pointed out the clown. "The wielder of these weapons cannot distinguish between good or evil, friend or foe. After time, only the act of fulfilling the weapon's purpose can bring any peace."
"All the more reason not to wield it myself," pointed out the dwarf. "Not to mention keeping it far away. For the local problem, I have other resources to bring into play."
Kodachi finally crawled out of the tunnel to find herself back in moonlight. A little more fragrant, perhaps, but intact.
The garden was wide and sprawling, indicative of some noble's estate. She was currently in the center of some hedge maze with a statue, a fountain, and the grate which she had just climbed up from.
Her eyes flicked to a sign, and to her surprise discovered the letters rearranging themselves. They squirmed around on the sign, becoming Japanese kanji while she caught her breath.
Kodachi blinked at the sign as it changed again.
"Surely this must be a mistake," reasoned Kodachi aloud. "I should be accorded the full courtesy one would a visiting noble."
As she entered the maze, the sign changed again.
