Kain raised his eyebrows at the other vampire's softly spoken words. "Trust me... this isn't Hell. I've been there. It's much less... pleasant."
Seras looked up at the other voice, for the first time realizing that she wasn't the only one there. It took her a moment to register what she was seeing. He was a tall man, with pale skin, and white hair. His face was angular, with pointed ears, pronounced fangs, and lizard-like eyes. It took her a moment to realize that she could hear no heartbeat in him. "I suppose you're a local vampire?"
Kain's confusion over the woman before him did not lessen from hearing her odd phrase. "Yes. Yet I have never even heard of a vampire such as you."
Seras snorted at the thought, but made no further comment.
Kain tilted his head to one side. "The townsfolk are working up their courage. I suggest we find cover, before they come to try and kill us, again."
"Maybe I should let them." Seras said softly.
Kain shrugged. "That is, of course, your choice. But I'd think, if you are truly suicidal, that you could find a more efficient manner of doing the deed than allowing these peasants to experiment. After all, they did such a good job before, didn't they." He extended his hand to the woman.
Grudgingly, she accepted it. He led her away from the carnage, walking around the back ways of the town, before finding an uninhabited house. "The people will search for us, but it will be night soon. And they will not risk facing one of us after darkness falls."
"I see." Seras replied in a monotone. She barely registered that she had grabbed the pike that she had been fighting with - the same one that had been rammed into her. Her mind kept showing her what she had done. What was she, now? How could she even try to be human, if she was capable of such a massacre? What was left for her?
Then she remembered...
Sir Integra, ordering the death of a reporter, leaving it to Alucard to do the deed... and then again, cutting her own throat open rather than risk being turned...
Wlater, kindly explaining how a particular weapon works... and the same man who tore through ghouls as the Angel of Death...
Old Peter Farguson, who never once ordered her to do something she wasn't capable of, even if she hadn't realized it herself... and who stood in front of a firing squad rather than back down from his mission.
They all knew what she was... what they all were...
It took monsters, to fight monsters.
Monsters bound by a duty...
"In the name of God, impure souls of the living dead, shall be banished into eternal damnation."
Kain blinked at the odd phrase. "Interesting creed."
Seras looked up at him. "Sorry about that, I needed to get my head back on straight," she replied. It was her life... or un-life, as the case may be... and right now, her duty was to get back home in one piece. "That you for your help. I'm Seras, Seras Victoria."
Kain nodded. "Very well. I am Kain, formally of Coorhagen." He tossed her some clothes he had scavenged. "I suggest you change, your... outfit... will only draw attention. Now, tell me, what business have you here, Seras Victoria?"
"Er... I'm rather lost, actually," Seras admitted. "I don't suppose you've ever heard of London, England before?"
Kain blinked. As a former nobleman, he had far more knowledge of the lands of Nosgoth than the average person, but he'd never heard of such places. "I have not. How did you end up so far from your home that you cannot find your way?"
Kain listened to Seras as she told an abbreviated explanation of how she found herself outside of Vasserbünde, and frowned as she finished. "So you disrupted the summoning of a demon, there was an explosion, and found yourself here, afterwards? Then I fear I can help you little. Only Azimuth the Planer or Moebius the Time Streamer may be able to help you... and they are both lost in the madness that has gripped the Circle."
Seras blinked. "The what?"
Now it was Kain's turn to explain some details, the madness of the guardians of Nosgoth's pillars, and how his only hope for a cure rested in restoring the corrupted pillars... an act that required the current 'guardians' demise.
