Genma had claimed that fighting the alligator, avoiding the ninja, and dodging or disarming the traps in the yard added value to the roses he picked and was also good training. Ranma believed that his father was just really cheap and wondered where he had gotten the chocolates from and if they were still any good.
As they approached the gate, they were confronted by an oddly dressed young man holding a stick as if it were a sword.
“Hold! Are you the one known as Saotome Ranma by chance?” Asked Kuno in a proud and overbearing voice.
Ranma stepped forward and replied, “Yeah, that’s me. Whatcha want?”
“I, Kuno Tatewaki, have the understanding that you are to be engaged to one of the lovely Tendo daughters.” He answered, puzzling the duo as he refers to himself in the third person.
“Yeah, that’s what Pops told me yesterday.” Confirmed Ranma.
“Then I insist that thou shalt not press thine suit with the lovely and fierce tigress Tendo Akane, for I am already courting her hand.” Kuno demanded loudly.
Ranma turned to his father with a questioning look causing Genma to explain. “He’s dating Akane and doesn’t want you to pick her as your fiancee.”
“Ahh! Well that sounds fair I guess. I wouldn’t want to break up a couple, right?” Ranma asked Genma.
“Wait Boy. You shouldn’t give up on the girl without even meeting her.” Genma told his son.
“Come on Pops, how well do you think it would go over if I picked her and broke up her and her boyfriend here.” Ranma replied. “She’d probably hate my guts from the get go.”
“Verily, this is so!” Kuno interjected. “Her wrath at being taken from my side would be terrible indeed.”
“See, it’d just cause problems.” Ranma told his father. “Besides I still have two other lovely Tendo girls to choose from, right?”
Kuno, seeing that things were going his way, stepped forward to support Ranma’s argument. “Indeed, both Tendo Nabiki and her older sister Kasumi are very attractive in both form and face.”
“That good enough for me.” Ranma said to Kuno. “I won’t pick your girlfriend ... “
“Akane” Genma reminds him.
“Right. I won’t pick Akane as my fiancee.” Ranma continued, then holds out his right hand. “Shake on it?”
Kuno quickly put away his bokken and eagerly seized Ranma’s hand to seal the deal between them and said. “Thank you, this is most reasonable of you. I shall look forward to being your Brother-in-law one day.”
Nabiki watched from her room as the Saotomes talked to Kuno and handled him without a fight and actually parted on good terms. This caused her to reappraise Ranma a little, not only was he easy on the eyes, but he must have some social skills to defuse Kuno like that.
Upon seeing Kuno leave and the two coming through the gate Nabiki gave her obi a final tug and hurried down stairs to greet them at the door.
Kasumi was startled as an excited Nabiki ran past in her finest kimono yelling “He’s here!” as she raced for the door.
“Oh my. Father, I’ll just go fetch Akane from the dojo.” Kasumi volunteered as he started for the front door after Nabiki.
