The crew of the Pioneer were all fit and quite a bit slimmer than Genma.
So Genma was congratulating himself on seeing the flying saucer dwindling into the distance when he realized two basic things about the escape pod.
1) It had no controls. He didn't realize that it was automated and would latch onto the nearest planetary body that could support life, then essentially crash with all power rerouted to the automatic beacon.
2) He had no son. Ranma was most definitely not visible.
It was #2 which was the most concerning to Genma.
Fortunately, he seemed to be heading to a planet.
