So, when her mother asked, "Okay, Ranma, you turn into... a god. Ami? Do you have some sort of 'secret identity' too?"
"She sure does," Ranma replied when his sister nervously hesitated, "She's been at it longer than I have too."
"Has she now..?"
"Yup. It's true."
"So, Ami. You want to show me too?"
Realising that she was going to have to reveal her secret, the younger Mizuno female tried to gather her confidence and called out her transformation phrase.
After the show of lights and sparkles, Doctor Mizuno stared at her daughter and said the only thing that could come to mind. "That skirt is short."
"I know," her son agreed. "But this is what 'Sailor Mercury' wears."
"And does she have that strange way of talking too?"
"No, I don't," Ami replied, and tried not to wring her hands in front of herself. "I'm the same girl you've always known."
"Not quite."
"Okay... I know that this has been a big secret, but I couldn't let either of you know what was going on."
"And why not?"
"Because you'd want to get involved!"
"Pardon me?"
"I've been a Sailor Senshi for a while, and every time someone normal tries to get involved they get hurt. Just keeping a friend or family safe is hard enough, but to deal with someone trying to play hero when they don't have the power to fight, or the knowledge, is worse."
"So you didn't tell us."
"I couldn't... People needed help, and if I told you both, then you'd never let me do what I have to."
"So you're the only one who can fight them," her mother asked drolly.
"Well.. yes. The powers allow me to fight them, and the enemy has been focusing in on people like me..."
"Just because you have powers."
"Not exactly... You see... I'm a reincarnation of a Princess of Mercury who was part of the court of the Princess of the Moon when the forces of evil destroyed that civilization."
"'Princess'?"
Mercury gave a little blush. "Well, yes... We were sent forward in time to be reborn to new lives where we could live our lives in peace, but still have the abilities to fight the evil if it arose again."
"None of this could be at least explained?"
"We couldn't. If we started telling people, then they'd have to be involved, and we don't want to disrupt things. If we did, then our whole lives would be thrown into chaos."
"Instead," Doctor Mizuno stated calmly, "You were putting yourself in danger."
"I tried not to, but I am one of the only ones with the powers neccessary to fight off these enemies, and if I don't do it, everyone will die. And I can't let that happen, especially not to you or Ranma."
"And how did he get involved?"
"He... saw me transform after he tried to fight a monster, and decided that he'd go out to get the power to help in the fight. I had no idea of where he went, where'd he gone off to, or how he was doing, except for one letter."
"Sounds like he was trying to protect you."
"He was, but it also put him in danger when I could have protected him." The Sailor Senshi bit her lip. "And he didn't know what sort of enemies we were facing, or their history. He just ran off, worrying me about how he was feeling, doing or taking what I'd done to him ..."
Coughing slightly to try and regain his composure, Ranma looked at his mother. "I didn't mean to worry anyone, but I could not stand by the sidelines when this would be going on."
"I wouldn't expect you to think any other way," his mother sighed. "But to think that you ran off when she's tempting fate..."
"I wouldn't! My friends and I try our best to win every fight without too much risk!" Mercury protested... and then slapped her gloved hands over her mouth.
"Hmm... So Usagi, Minako, Makoto and Rei are involved in this too..."
"We don't fight all the time..."
"I know, and I'm sure that most of what you do with them is a good influence on you."
"Oh, I'm sure that you're right."
"But it still doesn't change the fact that you've been getting into seriously dangerous fights where you could be killed," Doctor Mizuno commented, settling a wintry look on her daughter.
Turning back to normal form, Ami ducked her head while:
