"That sounds like a promising lead, but this started in Japan," pointed out Daniel Jackson. "As I understand it, nobody from any of the Stargate teams has come anywhere near Japan."
"That's correct," said General Hammond. "We've gone over every record. The closest we've uncovered is that Private Gunderson on level 1 reads Japanese comic books."
"'manga'," corrected Daniel automatically.
"Be that as it may, his sending of electronic funds to Japan is unlikely to have carried a virus," understated the General. "So this 'Nirrti' may have done something in Japan by means other than a Stargate. We'll have to investigate, though we're at reduced personnel right now and we have to go through diplomatic channels for authorization."
"How's Sam?" asked Daniel.
"Like Doctor Frazier, she's down and shows signs of this transformation. The spread rate of this disease is incredible." Doctor McKenzie spread some reports out. "Communicable stage begins within two hours after exposure. Nearly a 100% infection rate. Males get the disease but are apparently immune. Females begin genetic transformation within two days of infection - their own immune systems becoming transformed as part of it. Its some of these other reports that are even more bizarre than the disease itself."
"Like some girl growing a tail and cat ears isn't?" asked O'Neill.
"All the women who have gotten through the disease, and so far that 100% of those affected who weren't killed by panicked noninfected are healthier," pointed out Doctor McKenzie. "Look at this, there are women who have been blind or deformed since birth - now able to see and their deformities gone. There isn't an obese or sickly one to be found. Those who were missing teeth, now regrown. Ones who had AIDS for heaven's sake - now with fully functional immune systems. These reports are all across the media and the more these cases get out, the more people are actually going out and getting infected deliberately."
"I can see the appeal for some," admitted Daniel.
"The only problems not corrected automatically are relatively minor things," continued Doctor McKenzie. "So you still see catgirls wearing glasses to correct vision difficulties, or elfgirls who are lactose intolerant, things of that nature. There are also the enhancements to consider."
"Yeah, I've noticed they all tend to be kinda," Jack O'Neill held his hands as if holding soccer balls in both hands.
"That too, though thankfully not to that extent," admitted the Doctor. "No, I mean that all catgirls as far as we can tell are a little stronger and a lot faster than you would expect from their general build. Elfgirls all have superior eyesight, except those wearing glasses tend to be farsighted, and exceptional hearing. The physical and mental abilities of the gynoids are especially enhanced. Angels and succubi - they shouldn't be able to fly much less manifest these apparently psionic abilities."
"ESP abilities are one of the goals several System Lords have tried to develop within host populations, though Nirrti is the only one I can name immediately," admitted Teal'c.
"If this is the case, then that brings this 'special one' development into a sort of focus," said Doctor McKenzie. "It could be a failed attempt at making a superior host species that would automatically be loyal to the originating Goa'uld."
"The 'special one'?" asked Daniel.
"Many of the girls after transformation seem to orient on a single individual - usually a figure that they liked or trusted prior to transformation as the 'special one' for them," explained the Doctor. "The results are still coming in, but it looks like the bond of friendship or attraction is actually heightened after the transformation."
"That does fit," said General Hammond. "Could this have been some ancient experiment that was just unleashed by construction in the area or do you think it more likely this is a fresh experiment?"
"There's no evidence Nirrti was active in that part of the world," said Daniel. "She was a Hindu goddess of destruction and death. There's no direct corrolary in the Japanese pantheon that I can recall."
The group was briefly silent, each contemplating the effect of these changes. General Hammond was concerned that three SG teams had been deployed after probable exposure to the virus and two others were due back except that the Stargate had been put on closed status until more was known about this virus. Daniel Jackson pondered the possibility of this being some infighting between the Goa'uld System Lords. Teal'c wondered behind his impassive expression if this would keep him from returning to Chulak or if the disease was already there. Doctor McKenzie wondered why the female of the species was only affected.
Jack O'Neill wondered how this would affect the SGC. Not to mention the military. Suddenly you had women who could FLY. Aerial surveillance at the very least. If you took into account the increased strength of some, the enhanced senses of others, the speed and hand-eye coordination of still others - he could easily see the gender ratio of SGC teams changing drastically. At the very least the all-guy teams might be a thing of the past.
"...general... guys..."
"SAM?!" squeaked Daniel as he spotted the girl standing in the door. "You shouldn't be up."
"I concur with Doctor Jackson," said the General. "Every report states that this illness completes itself within three days and you've only been down two."
"...needed to... figured..."
As the Captain began to slide down, Jack had already moved and was there to catch her.
It was also quite obvious that she was becoming:
