However, those surviving the virus (as long as those around the victim didn't interfere it was 100% survivable, unfortunately there were casualties) were quickly found by the news media and certain details came out.
Guys were actually going out of their way to catch the virus at that point.
Some guys were going out of their way to catch it because of an innocent set of lines in the magical coding of the virus. When the transformation effect triggered - the individual would be cured of all diseases, curses, deformities, insufficiencies, etcetera. Once the glow had died down, the transformee was perfectly healthy.
Some guys were trying to catch the bug because of the extra length and such down THERE. They conveniently ignored that something about the virus' action gave them more control over their own sex drives and afterwards many guys found it incredibly useful to be able to turn down those drives to where they could concentrate on other things besides sex.
Since a male scientist had designed the effects, it wasn't too unexpected that he'd wanted an intelligence-boosting effect. Combining this with the ability to turn one's libido off in order to concentrate on other things, it was having definite effects in those transformees.
More odd were those whose flare up left them with magical abilities of their own. Not only were some individuals able to fly, they could summon up elemental effects or had superhuman strength or use psychic abilities.
Which was where part of the problems afterwards came from.
"Our money, Nabiki," said one of the boys. "Give it back."
"I don't know what you're talking about," stated Nabiki, eyeing the crowd.
"When some of us were collapsing in the hallways, you started stealing wallets and whatever loose change you could," said Hiroshi, his batlike wings fanning slowly behind him. "I also remember what you said about us 'dying' so that we wouldn't miss any of the things you took."
"I deny everything," said Nabiki, looking for exits.
"I recommend we reduce her to a fine red paste," said an Ogre, lumbering forward.
"Calm yourself," said another Dark Angel. "Observe what happens when I thrust a telepathic probe into her mind."
"What?" said Nabiki as she found herself relaxing as she met Hiroshi's eyes. Her thoughts slowing to a stop.
"This way we get our money, wallets, watches, and stuff back," said Hiroshi. "If anyone likes, I'll seal off her ability to recognize numbers."
"Nah, just get our stuff back," said Daisuke. "I feel unclean just glancing in that mind."
"I half expect Ranma to come leaping in to defend the witch," rumbled the Ogre.
"Not much chance of that," said Hiroshi. "Ranma's -"
