It was like wearing light magnification goggles at first, then she blinked and her eyes adjusted. Colors seemed muted but the shadows were transparent.
Her ears were so sensitive that she could pick up Doctor Frazier's even breathing two cots down, and even tell it was her though she wasn't sure how. She could tell from the sound of shifting in his chair that Doctor McKenzie was aware of her being awake.
She shifted up, her nose sniffing away. Her sense of smell was improved too. She could tell that Jack had been here. Recently too. In... that chair. At least a couple of hours there. Maybe a half hour ago. How could she tell that just from the scent?
Swinging around so that she was sitting up, she reached behind her to free her tail.
Her tail. HER tail. How very strange that was. It was long and covered with short fur that exactly matched the hair on her head. It needed groomed fairly badly, but she moved it about and encircled it with one hand. Soft and warm.
That brought her attention to her hands. Smooth skin, no fur showing there - yet there was something different about them. The nails were narrower, thicker, and longer. She kept them trimmed - a practical consideration. Now they were longer and looked like they were slightly claw-like?
"Do you want a mirror?" asked the Doctor as he made his way to her bedside.
"Please," said the Captain, glad her voice hadn't changed.
She was nervous as she took the hand mirror and looked into the surface. Yet that was undeniably her face. She smiled in relief only to stop and stare as she opened her mouth further and checked those out. The canine teeth were definitely longer and sharper.
She looked closer for changes and spotted the pupil. Was it now slightly slitted? Then there were the triangular cat ears sticking out of the top of her head. "How-"
"A lot of medical staff are down, it'll be some time before we know everything about the changes," said Doctor McKenzie. "What we do know from the reports out of Japan is that you're the most common type of transformee. The Japanese call them 'nekomusume' or 'nekomimi', most often translated as 'catgirl.' There's some thing you need to know before you go back to your quarters."
"This is common?" asked Samantha. "I heard some of the reports but they were so fragmented and -"
"Hardly anyone believed them without direct evidence," agreed the doctor. "Yes. Catgirls are the most common transformee. Things you should know. You're going to have trouble containing your emotions for awhile, particularly anything positive. Your physical strength will be greater, your tensile strength and ability to take g-forces is going to be WAY up. Some of the air force pilots with this transformation are practically going into adrenaline highs testing this out. Your hand-eye coordination and speed are likewise going to be high. There's some downsides though."
"Oversensitivity," said Samantha Carter. "My senses are too acute now. And there's something else."
"You discovered that when you sat up and nearly fell over," pointed out the doctor.
"Yeah," agreed the scientist. "Any idea how a virus could do this?"
"Current thinking is that there are Goa'uld trying to engineer a superior host race, and an experiment got out of hand," said Doctor McKenzie. "Another thing. Stay away from salads and vegetarian food choices."
"Huh? Why?" asked Samantha, thinking the idea of a salad was somehow repellant all of a sudden.
"We're still accumulating medical information as far as catgirls, but cats who are fed only vegetarian foods go blind. There's a chance of something similar happening and so - avoid it. We don't know how much the gastrointestinal tract has altered."
"Ah," said the scientist, not wanting to participate in THAT experiment. "Where's Colonel O'Neill?"
"Is he the 'special one just for you'?" speculated the doctor.
"Huh?" said Samantha, momentarily distracted by her bigger chest.
"Never mind," said McKenzie. "Just get some regular clothes on before you go hunting him down."
