As far as the legends of the True Runes went, a slightly different version was told.
The origin of the True Runes - translated from Old Norse by Donald Blake (1879)They called a Thing, a gathering of the leaders, and they sought to end the interclan warfare that had erupted. Seeking their wisdom, they sought the gods themselves to end the plagues upon them and the wrath of the Holding Beast that harried them.
North they went. Twenty-nine of them sought the halls of the gods. Two died in that seeking. One nearly died - his flesh speared through by a tree that sought human flesh. For twelve days and nights did Wodan battle the sickness upon him, and on the thirteenth he lay as one dead. The fourteenth day he rose, and on his left hand was the First True Rune.
Gungnir, the Spear Of Destiny, some call it. Wodan did lead his fellows forth, guided by the Spear. Each of the twenty-seven bore a True Rune. Within a year they did lead their comrades to battles.
Yet did the True Runes contest within each others place, and the gods who had granted these boons saw this and were displeased with the result. For even though none could bear more than one True Rune, and few could even bear more than one lesser Rune, still did the bearers taste their power and covet still more.
Worse were those who felt their power and proclaimed that they were gods themselves. To the gods who had given this boon, this blasphemy was unbearable.
Wodan Halfhand went to those who had been his companions on that journey and did counsel against their current actions. When he came before Yngvi The Flame he was slain, his body hacked apart and his left hand with its Rune secreted away.
Within a year all the True Rune bearers had been slain likewise, save Yngvi. For his act of betrayal the gods themselves intervened once more - his Rune stricken from him and his form transmuted to the lowliest of vermin.
Thus did the 27 True Runes fall into history, lest man be tempted by their power. Yet from those Runes had come lesser Runes which did spread amongst first the Viking and from there to other lands.
From the True Fire Rune of Yngvi, did he invest the favored of his sons and daughters with the Rage and Fire Runes.
From the True Rune of Gungnir had been borne the Runes of Dowsing, of Foresight, of Heroes, and of Sorcery.
From the True Rune of Sleipnir came the Horsetalker Rune, the Beast Rune, and other Runes associated with animals of the hunt and of the field.
From the True Rune of Mjolnir came the Thunder, Might, Storm, Lightning, and Strength Runes.
All Runes came from these 27 True Runes, and it is said that the gods left those behind as a reminder of the failure to properly wield the powers of the True Runes.
Which would have been of concern to Ranma and his father after Ranma spent three days and nights unconscious after the Rune had leapt to his flesh, especially as Ranma was now the bearer of the True Rune of:
