Legacy of Seras: Ghosts in the Machine [Episode 143954]

by Jryu

The uncompanionable silence continued as the pair searched through the fortress. The only thing keeping them from screaming at each other were the constant waves of living armor. It seemed that, even when they mangled the armor itself, it would slowly repair itself and come after them again.

When they realized that, Seras had immediately suggested withdrawing. She pointed out that they were not prepared for this kind of fight, and they had little hope of even reaching Malek if they could not figure out how to destroy his minions.

Naturally, Kain just snarled, and pressed on.

Seras, meanwhile, swore to herself that, if they got out of this alive, she was going to have it out with the other vampire. One way or another.

A sudden sound, like a scream, drew both their attention. "What manner of beast makes such a noise?" Kain asked, mostly to himself.

Seras shrugged, "It's your world. If you don't know, I sure as hell won't."

Kain ignored her, and walked down the hallway the scream came from. Seras frowned, but followed. The vampires quickly found themselves before a door, as another, almost metallic scream filled the air.

Kain pushed open the door, and they entered the room. Immediately, they were assaulted by another suit of mobile armor, but they easily dispatched it... or at least, put it down for several minutes.

Then they heard a new scream, coming from the large devise. Suddenly a door opened, and another suit of armor staggered out from it. Kain smashed it before it could attack them, while Seras looked at the machine. "Is this thing doing what I think it's doing?"

Kain nodded. "Yes, this must be what gives birth to those... wraiths."

"How is it doing that, though? How can a machine give life to armor?"

Kain was examining symbols along the walls, frowning. Then the machine started up again, a crane moving along the ceiling dropped pieces of armor into the top, and another ear splitting scream rang out from the device.

Kain nodded grimly. "Ingenious. And insidious."

Seras blinked at Kains words. "What? What is it?"

"It is only a guess, but... I believe he is calling forth the one that wore the armor in life, and binding that soul to it. Fusing the soul of a long dead warrior to his armor, so they may battle for eternity. Life without blood... what a travesty!"

Seras, meanwhile, was looking sick at Kain's description. "He's... he's... Exuro Telum!" she threw the bolt of magic energy right at the machine, and kept doing so until is finally ceased functioning.

Kain stared at her. "While I agree with destroying the device, what fuels such hatred?"

Before Seras could answer him, Malek's voice interrupted. "Do you hope to beat me, demons? Do not worry, your challenge will no go unmet."

"You do this, and call us demons?!" Seras screamed at the ceiling.

Kain looked on, confused at her ire.

"They pledged their lives to hunting monsters like yourself. Why should they not serve that role beyond death, as I do?" Malek sounded actually amused at being challenged over the issue.

"You hate them so much for being dead that you would do something like this to them? What kind of protector are you?!"

"A mad one." Kain answered her. "As all the circle are. Whatever decency or morality he may have once possessed has been twisted so much that it may as well not exist. Never forget that, the only way to stop tragedies like this one or those of the other guardians, is with their deaths."
