And he was married to her sister.
That was fine by her, but it did bring up a desire to check up on Nabiki. She could take care of herself in many things, but it wasn't usual to have to handle a returning husband. Not that there was anything wrong with that fact, but this wasn't just some simple meeting. The two of them were deeply in love, and they'd been apart when they'd wanted to be together. Adding in the knowledge that Nabiki usually kept her emotions under control, it was clear that this was a major deal.
So, she headed up the stairs and over to Nabiki's door in a fit of sisterly concern. Nothing was wrong with the desire to reunite with a love, but her sister was coming close to her version of bouncing off the walls, and for a girl who prided herself on her self control, that was a bit off. Of course, she would have wanted to talk anyway, seeing as she wanted to make certain that her sister would be okay. That made her knock on the door a strong one, and she stood tall as she waited.
"Who is it?" called out her sister's voice.
"It's me," Akane answered.
"Oh, come in."
Shrugging to herself, Akane opened the door, and stepped inside the room, blinking slightly at the sight of her sister dressed in only panties and a bra. "Already changing?"
"Not yet."
"Oh?"
Nabiki managed to look rather exasperated, and waved a hand at the clothing that she'd arrayed on the bed. "I want to pick the right one, but I'm not sure what that should be."
"Oh?"
"Well, there's this Chinese dress that makes me look all sensual, and would fit in with his trip, but I'm not certain if I want to just be sexy when we get together."
"I'm certain that you'll look sophisticated no matter what you where...."
"That's true. Maybe that's enough to get rid of that dressy stuff, but it'd help make it all formal."
"Since when has that guy ever been anything but a loudmouthed fighter."
"That's true," Nabiki admitted. "I mean, I was thinking about wearing a kimono, but that might be a bit much."
"For him. That's a definite possibility.
"Still, I could try and use the stylish stuff, so that I can give that extra flair for him."
"You have to realize that he doesn't need it."
"Why are you putting him down? Aren't you his friend," the married sister demanded with a scowl.
"I am! He's a great guy who puts his foot in his mouth way too often, but he's sweet, honest, and in love with you."
"Then what's your problem?"
"You!"
"Eh?"
Akane sighed heavily and rubbed a hand over her eyes before turning to her sister and spearing her with her gaze. "Listen. He's known you in all your outfits. He's seen you in your school uniform, in your regular clothing, and when you dress up. And he loves you through all of that. Hell, even when you borrowed stuff from my closet, he still loved you! What he probably wants to find when he gets back is you."
"I just... let it go to my head."
"Huh?"
Plopping herself onto her desk chair, Nabiki stretched her legs out in front of her, and seemed to be looking at something that only she could see. "It's just that.... I want to impress him. I want to show him that I'm still more than a simple school bookie."
"You are more than that."
"I know, but...."
"What?"
"I need to know...." the elder girl began as her hand closed upon her wedding ring. "That I'm still worthy of him."
That brought the younger sister to stare at the seated girl. "What?"
"He has known what I've done, and he still loves me. He gives me so much that I feel like I'm a bit of a leech."
"Well... umm...."
"What? No words of wisdom?"
"To be honest? No. I don't know what to say."
"Is that so?"
"Give me a break! It's not like I know all about romance!" Akane snapped back.
"True. All you've got is Kuno, and that isn't quite the same thing, is it?"
"Him? I don't think that he'd know true romance, or the fact that I'll never want him, even if you whapped him upside the head with either one."
"That is my dear dimwitted classmate."
"But that's part of why I envy you. Ranma and you love each other in a way that I think of as fitting in with the stories that are in movies and television. You guys have the sort of relationship that I want when I finally find the guy I'll marry."
"I... can see where you're coming from."
"I hope so," the younger girl replied. "Seeing as you were willing to work as hard as you could so that you could marry him."
"I guess that you do make some sense after all."
"Grr..."
"Don't be like that. You came up here because you were worried, remember?"
"And for good reason. You're acting a bit off, you know."
"Ahh... Can't dispute that. But I want to make this special, and fit every idea that I've been having into our reunion. Romance, love, sex.... I want to put an element of it all in there, and I guess I'm just running around like a chicken without its head.
"And it's a bit... strange to see."
"Ah, well. Maybe I should settle for one line in it all," Nabiki murmured, with a twinkle in her eye. "Maybe a tight top so that he can see what he might like to ravish."
"Don't say things like that!"
"I am his wife. It's expected for us to sleep together."
Groaning lowly, Akane covered her face with her hand, and wondered when her sister would stop fooling around, while:
