Being back in this city made him able to almost see all sorts of things that he'd remembered every night that he'd been away. Each night, he went to sleep, and recalled what it had been like to have Nabiki in his arms, to be able to see the vulnerable look in her eyes before they kissed deeply, and the constant awareness that she was as attracted to him as he was to her. The idea that someone so... beautiful could actually want someone like him was rather astonishing to him.
Then again, he'd been impressed by her ever since their first meeting, when she'd shown that she was a heck of a lot smarter than he was in school stuff. Sure, she couldn't match him in a martial arts battle, but he wasn't so certain about a battle of wits. Of course, given the fact that he'd started getting to be very aware of her body when she would get close to him to help him with a homework problem.
Finding out that she liked him too had been a revelation, as they'd started exploring other avenues. Instead of some of the stuff that he'd heard in the locker room, they'd gone slow, and he'd discovered that just touching her could be rather pleasurable. They'd snuggled, kissed, and done all sorts of things together. He could remember the blush he'd had when she'd sat on his lap for the first time, curling her shapely body against his.
And now she was out there, so close to him that he could almost see her face right in front him. Not that his father would think that it would be good, as his Pop had never approved of him taking on things on his own. But if there had been one lesson that Nabiki had taught him, it was to try and use his brain. He didn't do so well on that point all the time, but he did have a bit of a better idea of how to handle things.
That was something that his father just might find out soon enough. If he had to, and it was entirely possible that he would, he'd be sneaking away from his father at the first opportunity that he had. Then he could go out and find his wife, whom he would reunite with as soon as he could. It didn't matter what the old man had wanted, as they'd gone on the stupid trip merely because it'd been what his father wanted. Now that they were back, which meant that he could get what he wanted, which was Nabiki.
About the only reason that they were together at the moment was that Genma had finally told him something only right then about the 'friend' that they were going to visit. When his father had told him that the guy that they were supposed to see was named 'Tendo', the pigtailed boy almost stopped breathing. He knew that there was a chance that the given name of this 'friend' was 'Soun', and that there were possibly certain daughters that he'd want to see. But there were possibilities that this was another 'Tendo' family, and he didn't want to get his hopes up. Still, it was something, and he was not about to lose this chance.
There was just one thing that he didn't know about all this.
"Why are we goin' ta your friend's place, Pop?" Ranma asked.
Genma drew himself up with as much dignity as he could manage. "For an old promise, boy."
"That tells me nothin', ya know."
"It is the truth."
"Then what's the promise 'bout?"
"Years ago, Tendo and I went through a terrible ordeal that no soul should ever have to suffer. Because of that, we became as close as brothers, and because of that, we decided that we would engage our children."
"'Engage'?"
"Exactly. We're going to meet your fiancee."
Once again, Ranma found himself stiffening as he realized the ramifications of that statement, and he wondered about what this could mean for his situation, while:
